THE LORDSHIP OF JESUS CHRIST

The Divine Authority and Savior of Humanity

By JOHN U. ORDILLOPublished 3 years ago 4 min read

Introduction:

The Lordship of Jesus Christ is a foundational concept in the Christian faith, emphasizing His divine authority and role as the Savior of humanity. The Bible presents Jesus as the Son of God, with inherent authority over all creation. His lordship extends over the Church, all nations, and even the future. This article explores the biblical proofs and theological significance of the Lordship of Jesus Christ, highlighting His supremacy, salvation, and the implications of His Lordship for believers.

Jesus as the Son of God

The Bible presents Jesus Christ as the Son of God, fully divine and equal to God the Father. In the Gospel of John, Jesus is described as the Word who was with God and was God from the beginning. This affirms His eternal existence and divine nature. As the Son of God, Jesus possesses inherent authority and lordship over all creation. Colossians 1:15–20 describes Jesus as the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation, and the one in whom all things hold together. This passage underscores His supreme position and authority. The Bible teaches that Jesus is not just a prophet or a moral teacher but the Son of God. He is presented as fully divine, equal with God the Father (John 1:1–3; Colossians 1:15–20). As the Son of God, Jesus has inherent authority and lordship over all creation.

Authority over Creation

The Bible teaches that Jesus played a significant role in the creation of the world. In the book of Genesis, God said, “Let us make mankind in our image” (Genesis 1:26), indicating the involvement of the triune God — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Furthermore, Colossians 1:16–17 states that all things were created through Jesus and for Him. This highlights His supreme authority and lordship over all of creation. Not only was Jesus involved in the initial act of creation, but He also sustains and upholds all things by His power. Understanding Jesus’ authority over creation deepens our appreciation for His lordship and the sovereignty He exercises over the universe.

The New Testament affirms that Jesus played a role in the creation of the world (Colossians 1:16–17). This highlights His supreme authority and lordship over all things. Through Him, all things were made, and by Him, all things are sustained.

Lord of Salvation

One of the central aspects of Jesus’ lordship is His role as the Savior. The Bible teaches that salvation is found only in Jesus Christ. Acts 4:12 declares, “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” Jesus’ lordship is intimately connected to His work of redemption. Through His death on the cross and resurrection from the dead, Jesus provided the means for forgiveness of sins and reconciliation with God. He paid the price for humanity’s sin, offering salvation and eternal life to all who believe in Him. By accepting Jesus as Lord and Savior, individuals enter into a personal relationship with Him and are transformed by His grace.

The Bible teaches that Jesus is the Savior and the only way to salvation. Acts 4:12 states, “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” Jesus’ lordship is intimately tied to His role as the Savior, and He exercises authority over the process of salvation.

Lord over the Church

The Bible portrays Jesus as the head of the Church, which is His body. Ephesians 1:22–23 emphasizes that God “placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.” As the head, Jesus exercises authority, guidance, and direction over the community of believers. He provides spiritual nourishment, equips the Church for ministry, and empowers believers through the Holy Spirit. Acknowledging Jesus’ lordship over the Church reminds us of the need for submission to His authority, unity in His purposes, and the importance of living out our faith in the community.

The Bible describes Jesus as the head of the Church, which is His body (Ephesians 1:22–23). He is the supreme authority and ruler over the community of believers, guiding and directing them.

Lord over All Nations

The Lordship of Jesus Christ extends beyond the boundaries of the Church to encompass all nations. Matthew 28:18 declares that Jesus has been given all authority in heaven and on earth. His lordship is not limited to believers but extends to every sphere of life and society.

The Bible teaches that Jesus has been given all authority in heaven and on earth (Matthew 28:18). He is not just the Lord of believers but the Lord over all nations. His lordship extends to every sphere of life, and one day, every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord (Philippians 2:9–11).

Lord of the future

The Bible reveals that Jesus will return as the triumphant Lord. He will judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end (Revelation 19:11–16; 22:12–13). His lordship extends beyond the present age, and He will reign eternally.

KING OF KINGS

Conclusion:

Overall, the Bible presents Jesus Christ as the Lord of all creation, the Savior, the head of the Church, and the one who holds ultimate authority and power. His lordship is central to the Christian faith, and believers are called to submit to His authority, follow His teachings, and live in obedience to Him.
