the fear of an ordinary life.

Koinophobia

By erin williamsPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

This is a fear that is not talked about. It is real and it effects many people. The cause can be many things, you may have been born with it or there is some sort of emotional trauma. It doesn’t make you a bad person, it makes you unique and different. You may be thinking, why would someone be scared of something like that? Well, im going to explain to you how they feel and what goes on in their mind.

I’ve made my way through many websites and articles to find some of the main reasons why people have this horrific phobia and to my surprise, many had the same theories. Some people have the desire to be special and I know your probably thinking, yes we all do, however this is more of an intense feeling. They may be special in life but who’s to say they feel it?

Studies show that it usually starts in their childhood. Some children are brought up being taught that being average isn’t enough and that we “need” to be something or someone in this life. That it’s, and I quote “what we’re living for”. So children are being brought up thinking if we’re not doing good in school or don’t have a job, our lives are useless. This causes so many people to believe that if your not rich, smart or pretty, your worth nothing. Continuing this point, many of us a growing up trying to reach impossible expectations. Getting told to get good grades or do well in sports, go to collage and yes, im sure if you worked hard you’d get into college and get an amazing job however, for some people it’s not that easy. It may be the case of, they find it difficult to learn or have a disability, im which case you will be shamed for it.

Now, one this that caught my attention was that fact it can also be the opposite situation. What i mean by this is parents constantly tell us we’re special and we can do anything. This may not seem like an issue to you but when we grow older we believe that we can do anything and by the time we’re adults we get crushed by realising the world isn’t black and white (easy). They don’t warn us about what the world is really like and when we realise it, it’s soul crushing. We see all these social media posts and start comparing ourselves because the lives are “perfect”. We look at people who decide to quit their ordinary lives and become wealthy, and getting that rushing feeling of pressure because we want to avoid being “normal” as if it’s a curse to reality. Not to mention Society’s obsession with being unique and extraordinary. They paint an image for us, expecting us to live up to it, but not everyone can. Not all of us will.

I’m aware that not all of us feel this way, however for the people who do. This is for you, so others can understand what it’s like. This can come with depression, social anxiety, even just anxiety. The point is, this society we’re living in expects us to all act a certain way, look a certain way, think a certain way, be a certain way however it’s physically impossible to all agree on the same things, like the same things or even just understand the same things. It seems like being just you isn’t good enough for this generation. You need a reason to be sad, you need a reason to be angry. Sometimes we just are.
