Rudy Lee: Code Name “The Cool Mom”
A Mother’s Day tribute my big sister Rudy Lee’s journey to motherhood.

When I was atleast 10 years old I could honestly guess that my older sister Rudy would have been a good mother, she was in training for it for a long time. What I could not have guessed is that she would actually BE a mother. So 20 years later, here she is and per her own account, she is known as Rudy Lee: The Cool Mom.

Now ever since we were kids Rudy was the secondary mother in our family household out of all three of my mom’s children. When my mother wasn’t around it was Rudy’s job to make sure we all ate, did homework, made it back in the house at a decent hour and made it to bed on time. In the 90’s she just had to worry about all of this with me, but at the turn of the century the youngest out of us all, my little sister Kindal was born and then it became a double dose for old Rudy Lee.
Though Rudy did a great job taking care of us, it was a bit of a burden. I mean, the chick did have a social life with friends and liked to talk on the phone and go hang out like all the other annoying teenagers in America, but it’s like she only got to do all of those things provisionally, given the caretaker duties she was responsible for in our family. So even when she did get to go out and be a kid every now and then, she had to drag me and Kindal along for the ride for much of the time. As a kid Rudy had great motherly skills, but given all the draining responsibilities she had I was like 100% sure she never wanted kids of her own at any point in her future life.

Though I never actually heard Rudy say she didn’t want to be a mother in the future, I kind of just assumed. I mean if you had to play mom to a couple of kids who were just as bratty as you all the time, would you want to be an actual mother later in life? Exactly, probably not, but ironically that’s just not how life turned out.
At the age of 17 Rudy got pregnant with her son Chase. I was 14 at the time and it was a big shock to me. It was a shock because she was pregnant and a shock because she seemed to look forward to motherhood. I’m not saying she was the most gleeful soon to be mother of the bunch, but she looked ready to have a bundle of joy enter the world and happy to be his mother.

So Rudy ends up having Chase and starts to slowly morph into a different person. Chase becomes her best friend and her motherly duties pose no real challenge because she has already been preparing for them since she was a kid, due to how much she took care of me and Kindal. Not even a full decade later marriage and family life came calling. In 2016 Rudy married Travis Scott (no, not the rapper), who already had children of his own and became a mother to a family of children. Eventually Rudy and Travis had a son of their own together, Seven Lee Scott and then she became a full circle mom.

Fast forward to today and Rudy is a seasoned professional at motherhood and its a duty she genuinely loves. She stays on top of her children’s school lives and is heavily supportive and attentive to all of their sports lives. She pretty has all the same interest in the extracurricular lives of her children that our mother had for us growing up. When I was picking on Rudy a few years ago on social media about being a dorky mom, she jokingly replied that all of her kids friends think she’s the “cool mom”. I wouldn’t have believed it 20 years ago, but I’m glad to say it, Rudy really did become the cool mom.

~~Dedicated to my big sister Rudy Lee, “The Cool Mom”.
