Making the Right Decision

A Rational Approach to Ethical Decision Making

By Shamim Ikram Hasan (Danny)Published 12 months ago 4 min read

In the past year, I made a critical decision to exit a toxic business environment that had brought me significant emotional and professional distress. During the economic uncertainty of 2022-2023, exacerbated by the challenges posed by COVID-19, I made certain decisions that led me into an unfit and unethical individuals professional attachment . The individuals I dealt with were engaged in fraudulent activities, morally disengaged, wretched and demonstrated a severe lack of commitment . My time investment was disrespected, and I found myself in a situation where betrayal, and unethical behavior were rampant. After a period of reflection, I decided to exit this situation and pursue a path aligned with my values and professional integrity.

Decision-Making Process:

The decision-making process I used to exit this unethical individuals and groups was primarily rational, although bounded rationality also played a role. A rational decision-making process involves systematically identifying the problem, gathering relevant information, evaluating alternatives, and making a decision based on logic and facts. In this case, I clearly identified the ethical concerns and lack of trust within the industry training . I conducted a thorough analysis of the situation, weighing the pros and cons of staying versus leaving the unethical groups. I considered factors such as the long-term damage to my reputation, the impact on my emotional well-being, and the possibility of finding better opportunities that aligned with my values.

At the same time, my decision-making was influenced by bounded rationality because I did not have access to all the information needed to make a fully informed decision. The unpredictable and unethical behavior of the individuals involved made it difficult to foresee all the potential outcomes. However, I worked with the information available and made the best decision possible given the constraints.

Why I Used This Process?

I chose the rational decision-making process because it allowed me to stay objective and focused during a highly emotional and stressful time. The rational approach helped me analyze the situation systematically, which was essential for navigating a partnership rife with deceit and moral disengagement. In a context where emotions could easily cloud judgment, using a structured framework helped me evaluate the situation based on facts rather than impulsive reactions.

The elements of bounded rationality came into play because the situation was complex, and complete information was impossible to obtain. Given the unpredictability of these individualss' actions, it was impractical to aim for a perfectly rational decision. Instead, I made the best decision possible within the constraints of time and available information. This combination of rational and boundedly rational processes allowed me to consider both logic and the realities of the situation.

Was It the Right Choice?

In hindsight, using the rational decision-making process was the right choice. The process allowed me to detach from the emotional turmoil caused by the unethical actions of them and make a decision based on a careful evaluation of the risks and benefits. By systematically analyzing the situation, I was able to prioritize my long-term professional and personal well-being. The bounded rationality aspect also helped me make a timely decision, even with incomplete information, which was crucial in preventing further harm to my reputation and emotional state.

While the decision to exit from such unethical situation came with its own set of challenges, such as potential financial setbacks and reputational risks, it was necessary for my overall growth. The long-term benefits of aligning myself with ethical and trustworthy individuals far outweighed the short-term difficulties.

Benefits and Challenges of Using a Different Process

Had I chosen to use an intuitive decision-making process, the benefits might have included a quicker decision. My intuition had been signaling early warning signs about the unethical nature of these individuals. Acting on these instincts might have allowed me to exit the situation sooner and avoid some of the negative experiences I endured. Intuition could have been particularly helpful in navigating the moral and emotional dimensions of the situation, where logical analysis might fall short.

However, relying solely on intuition could have also presented challenges. In a complex situation involving business, reputation, and ethics, intuition alone may not have provided a comprehensive assessment of the risks and potential consequences. An intuitive approach might have led me to make a decision based on emotional responses, without fully considering the financial and professional implications.

On the other hand, a more boundedly rational approach could have helped me make a quicker decision by accepting the inherent uncertainties of the situation. Instead of attempting to gather as much information as possible, I might have acted more swiftly, recognizing that a perfect solution was unattainable. However, this approach could have increased my anxiety about the unknowns and led to second-guessing my decision after the fact.

Ultimately, the rational decision-making process was the most appropriate for the situation I faced. It provided me with the structure needed to navigate a highly emotional and ethically complex engagement . The bounded rationality element helped me manage the uncertainty and limitations of the information available. While an intuitive approach might have offered speed and an emotional response to the situation, the rational process allowed me to make a well-informed decision that aligned with my long-term values and goals.
