I will love you to the last breath

Chapter one

Jessica

Today was probably the hottest day of the year and I spent it with my mom and dad in the car, Julian wasn't even here, the lucky one was in that great camp where I used to go when I'm apparently too big . 18 years no longer integrate in that place.

No, normally this weekend I was supposed to be on a beach in Miami, but our plans were canceled because Dad had to get to a major operation in New York in a few hours.

This is one of the big disadvantages when one of your parents is a doctor.

Okay, don't get me wrong, giving up a vacation in Miami to operate on a little girl who will never be able to walk without this surgery is really wonderful. What he's doing is really wonderful and I understand, but it was a vacation in Miami so spare me! I also have the right to be a little pushed.

-I've arrived!

Dad parks the car and we all get off. The door of the house opens and the grandmother appears. As soon as I see her, well, I'm upset because you just can't help but love Grandma Shaw.

-Hello, hello!

-Jessica, honey! Come here!

She pulls me toward her to hug me.

-How are you doing my dear?

I smile.

"All right!"

Grandma is not like an ordinary grandmother and I think that makes her so wonderful. That is, although she is 65 years old, and has given birth to five children, she continues to look good.

Her blue eyes never lost their luster. She continues to be engaged and elegantly dressed, and she is full of life.

If you didn't know her, you wouldn't know how old she was. The only thing that makes her a little naked is her white hair, but she always has it arranged and it seems to me that it fits her very well. It gives her a gentler aura.

-That's your luggage, Jessica! And now we have to go!

My father tells me. I nod to them and go to hug them:

-To get them done with your operation, Dad!

He grins.

-I will do so!

Grandmother hugs him too:

-Okay, Mom, now we really have to go, we'll miss the plane if we don't.

Grandmother shouts:

-Oh, my God! You would think that since you have five children you will always be surrounded by them and you will never have a moment to get bored and yet look that they are in too much of a hurry to say goodbye.

I look at my father and I can barely remember his smile when I see him roll his eyes and laugh, but his grandparents don't find it funny:

-Cameron!

She says and slaps him lightly on the arm:

"Don't look me in the eye!" Especially in front of your daughter. What kind of example do you give him?

My mother and I giggle when my father approaches my grandmother and kisses her on the cheek:

-Sorry. I promise we'll come see you more often. I love you!

Grandma mutters something but her annoyance passes immediately and she smiles:

-I love you too darling! Have a nice flight!

We do it with his hand and his mother's as they start the car and leave. As soon as they disappear from the alley, Grandma turns to me:

-Come on, inside, honey, I made lemonade and that fruit cake you love!

I smile and follow Grandma inside. You see, I told you she was a cool grandmother.2

***

-Jessica ?!

-Yes!

-Please come here a little, darling!

I got up from the couch in the yard and went to the garage:

-What happened, grandma?

She was looking for something in one of the ten boxes there.

-Ah, I want to get these boxes out the gate. And I thought you could look through them. Maybe you'll like something. There's some of My stuff over there.

I nodded

.

She smiled.

"All right, well, I'm going to make lunch." If you find something interesting, let me know!

He winked at me and entered the house.

I headed for some of the boxes. I had nothing better to do so ...

I opened the first box. Inside was a basketball and a number 10 T-shirt on it. Probably his uncle Trent's, or maybe his father's or Jensen's or Jared's. I had no idea. I moved on. I came across other car parts. Trophies and more boys' clothes. I had to rummage through the boxes for a while until I found one that contained girl stuff.

Even the model of the box was something more special. She had silver models, I guess Grandma didn't want to give this cut.

I sat down with the box on my lap and began to look through it.

I found a globe with glitter and water in it. The model inside was two children holding hands. I shook the globe slightly and then set it aside. There was another ticket to the movie Focus.A pair of sunglasses and a boy's T-shirt and a hat.

I was about to close the box and move on to the next one when something caught my eye. I put my hand back in the box and took a notebook from the bottom of it.

It was more of an agenda with a floral pattern on the cover. I studied it a bit and then I opened it. His pages were yellowed as if he wanted to show his antiquity.

I turned the front page and ran my finger over the writing on the paper.

May 22 Michigan

Dear diaries,

My name is Alba Robinson and today is my birthday . I turned 16 and this diary, which is my first diary , I received as a gift from Cole, who you should know is my best friend ... - Jessica ! Grandma's voice pulled me out of my trance. I quickly closed the diary, put it back in the box just as Grandma's head appeared in the doorway: " Did you find anything, sweetheart?" -Just a lot of boy's clothes.

She laughed. "

That's what happens when you raise four boys, darling!" Come on, lunch is ready.

-Coming!

I put the lid on the box but I didn't put it back with the others and somewhere on the edge. I got out of the garage and followed Grandma into the kitchen. That evening, I went back to the garage to look through the boxes. I found some nice clothes that belonged to Mia and some photos from when they were all little.

But my attention kept turning to that box in the corner.

At the end of the evening, just before I returned to my room, I took the box with me.

***

With a plate full of Grandma Shaw's delicious cookies and a cup of tea, I went to bed.

I took the box I had brought with me and opened it.

There was only one thing inside me that really appealed to me.

Grandpa's diary.

I opened the front page again and decided to read on.

I felt a little like I was doing something wrong as if I was invading my grandmother's privacy but I'm sure if I had asked her about anything from here she would have told me so I read ...

May 24

Dear jurnaule,

Today has been a normal day . After I got back from school, I went to the center with Cole to see the races , and then we went to our secret place by the lake, which is probably not so secret now since I told you . to you , but I trust you to keep my secret .

There was a brief note a few months later.

14 august

Dear jurnaule ,

This was a very hot day in Michigan , so Cole and I went swimming in the lake this morning. Have I ever told you that this is my favorite place in the world? Ah, and Cole? Being in my favorite place with my favorite person made this one of the best days I've had lately .

Then dating goes ahead.

October 16

Dear jurnaule ,

It's been 2 years since I 've written here. Yeah, you 're right , I'm almost 18 now. I honestly forgot about this diary (no offense ), I came across you now and I felt like I needed to talk to someone. I have Cole with whom I can talk anything but now it's quite late and I do n't want to try to get out of the house and

to somehow wake up my mother 's new boyfriend . Ih! Mother's new boyfriend is even worse than her last boyfriend, he was a bastard who did nothing but sleep on the couch all day and watch TV while he had a beer in his hand, but with him it was a lot better than Ray, who was now his mother's new boyfriend for about two weeks .

Ah, did I mention that Ray is a drug dealer? The writing is scrambled as if someone were trying to cover up what he was writing.

Maybe I shouldn't have written this if someone found it ... but do you really know anything? To find him and to know that his mother's new boyfriend is a damn drug addict !

I keep my mouth open and my fingers stick to the corner of the page to turn it over and read on, but something in me won't let me do that.

Not after the last words I read. Although I'm curious, I didn't expect to find such a thing written. I was thinking of some innocent thoughts of a 16-year-old girl.

I close the diary and put it back in the box and then put the box under the bed.

I turn off the light and put my pillow better. I close my eyes trying to fall asleep, but in my mind those words written in bold are repeated. The next day, I put on a light white dress, took off some comfortable sandals, and told my grandparents that I was going for a walk, and she asked me if I could stop by the neighborhood supermarket. given a list of what to buy.

It didn't take me long to get to the store. I went in and walked through the districts until I got everything on the list and went home.

In front of me was another baron who was paying for his things, and then I followed.

- Hey!

I looked up at the cashiers. He couldn't be much taller than me, 19 or maybe 20. He had dark brown hair and brown eyes. He smiled at me and I smiled slightly when I greeted him back:

-Hey!

He started taking things out of my basket and scanning them and I put them in the bag I had taken with me.

- So you're from here? I don't think I've seen you before.

I look at him again and then at the letters written in black on the chest badge

Kay

-I'm not from here. I only stay with my grandparents for a few days.

He nodded as if to understand,

"That would be exactly $ 24.30."

I handed him the money and he smiled at me as he handed me the receipt: "

Well, have a nice day ...

" "Jessica."

-Jessica. Of course. he said with a smile

. I left the store and returned home.

***

Grandma was making a big cup of iced tea when I went into the kitchen. I put the net on the table:

-Thank you, honey, do you want some tea?

I nodded.

"I'm going to change and come back."

-I'm waiting for you in the garden!

I went upstairs and changed into a pair of shorts and a T-shirt.

I watched my reflection in the mirror as I caught my hair in a light bun.

I had the blue eyes specific to the Shaw family. Except for the twins, Lucas and Landon and Eve, who had inherited their mothers' eyes, all of them in the Shaw family had blue eyes.

Just before I left the room, my eyes fell on the box under the bed.

I approached her and hesitantly picked up her diary and then went downstairs.

Grandma was waiting for me in filigree. She smiled at me as I sat down next to her in one of the comfortable chairs.

"Grandma?"

-Yes Dear.

I stirred my fingers for a moment:

-I was looking through the boxes yesterday and I came across one, I think it was yours. I found that in her.

I handed him the diary.

I saw how Grandma's eyes walked on him and how his expression changed when he realized what it was.

She reaches for him and sees his fingers tremble as she grabs him.

-I thought we lost him when we moved ...

-He was in one of the back boxes.

Grandma took the diary and turned it around, studying it as if she couldn't believe she saw it.

He opened it and took a deep breath when he ran his hand over the front page, I saw that a wave of nostalgia appeared on his face:

-It's been so long!

Her voice is low and choked.

-I read a few pages.

I say and I feel my cheeks turn red. Grandma looked at me.

"But I stopped quickly." There were only about 3 notes ...

-It's okay.

Grandma also gives a few more pages and I see that she stops at the one where she writes damn drugged and I see that she grimaces:

-Grandpa?

-Yes?

-What is written in the diary. It's true?

She looked up at her blue eyes and stared at me for a moment. I really don't think he'll answer me when he suddenly answers:

-It's a part of my life that no one knows.

-Not even Grandpa?

-Apart from him. But your grandfather doesn't know everything either. There was someone who knew ...

-Was that boy you wrote about, Cole

?

It makes my mouth water beforehand. Grandma winces when she hears his name and for a moment I think she will be upset but then I see that she smiles softly:

-Yes. He. Cole.

Her daughter got a new expression when she spoke his name: -Where

is he now? You kept in touch ...

I see that my grandmother is sad:

-It's a long story.

My eyes express curiosity:

-But you want to hear it, don't you?

I nod and bite my lip.

Grandma sighs:

"You're my first niece, so maybe you won the right to tell your story." But hey, Jessica, you're the first person I'm telling this to.

I nodded with interest. My grandmother studied me for a moment:

-Okay, are you ready to find out the story of my life?

I nodded and Grandma sat up better in her chair and started talking ...
