Brad Macon: The Dad who brought me back to Bible Study

How my bonus dad inspired me to return to bible study

As a kid having bible study was a big deal in my family. My mother had it with me and my sisters on a weekly basis. As I grew into my teen years and early adulthood I went to church periodically but didn’t really go to bible study anymore. It wouldn’t be until I started back going to church with my best friend that changed everything. Going to church with my best friend introduced me to my adoptive family, the Macons and the father of the family, Brad Macon, is the dad who brought me back to bible study.

Brad Macon became my adoptive dad when Nicole (Peggy) became my adoptive mom. When I first met Brad at church he handled the music for the praise and worship team. Our earliest interactions were just us saying hey to each other when we first got to church on Sundays, but the interactions started to grow as we began spending a lot of time with each other outside of church.

The more me and Brad spent time together the more I discovered that we both had a lot in common. We both love Tupac’s music among alot of other Hip Hop and we both love the same type of action movies which we watch together often. More than anything we both had a shared love for getting on Nicole’s last nerve. One day at church our pastor was doing a sermon on rebellion and sitting between me and Brad, Nicole remarked “I’m sittin between two rebellious people right now.” Perhaps the biggest shenanigans we pulled on Nicole was overheating the back seat of her car when she got in and driving the car at full speed as she desperately tried to roll the windows down for air. As me and Brad enjoyed her misery Nicole screamed out “I hope y’all get appligated to this heat because this is how it’s gon’ feel when y’all go to hell.”

Me and Brad overheating Nicole in the back seat of her car as a prank.

An important fact that Brad never knew about himself in those early years of us knowing each other is that he was the person who inspired me to attend bible study on a regular basis. I’ll be honest, the first time I ever attended bible study with the Macons was just because of the good food that I knew was being cooked during bible study at the time, it wasn’t something I wanted to commit to regularly until after forcing myself to go for the next couple of weeks, Brad was chosen to give a sermon for Bible study one night.

Up until this point I wasn’t used to hearing Brad speak on the word of God and how it relates to the struggles we go through as God’s children, but on this night he had my focus like never before. That night Brad gave a sermon on generational curses, what they mean and how we break them. He also talked about how generational curses effect our relationships and our walk with God. Most interestingly he talked about how the opposite of generational curses (generational blessings) exist as well and how we can enable the best parts of our family lineage and traits and use them to do God’s work as well and that this was something to be appreciated.

I realized how relative Brad’s words were to the rest of my life. Brad himself shares a lot of similarities with my actual father. They both have an edgy sense of humor and though they seem quiet and reserved among the rest of the church environment, when they step up to speak you’ll see that the wisdom of God’s words is in their hearts. The night that Brad spoke reawakened that hunger for that bible study presence that I was raised in by my mother and I knew it was time to go back and I have Brad to thank for this wake up call.

I returned to bible study and it became a regular learning experience and at the same time, an enjoyable experience. Brad Macon is a lot of things: a father, husband, hard worker, funny and quirky, but also a bonus father and mentor to me, whether he knows it or not. He has made an incredible impact on my life and I’ll always love and appreciate him for it.

Joe, thanks for posting this piece. At 56, I'm only beginning to see the Scriptures through the and unconditional love of Jesus. Still, my youth group, Mom, and others pointed me in that direction.
