I never thought my best friend would put her reputation above my safety. It was a rude awakening that left me feeling betrayed and confused.
It happened while we were traveling in Singapore. She worked in the hospitality industry, so we got a room in a 5-star hotel at a great price.
We got back to our room after shopping. Later, we wanted to have snacks, so I opened the fridge, then drink bottles fell out. There were broken bottles everywhere. I kneeled and started cleaning.
My friend stood over me, saying it was my fault and worried about what the hotel manager would think of her. I was confused and upset. Yet I didn't say anything because the bottles did fall out when I opened the refrigerator. It was just an accident.
After cleaning up, we decided to go out for snacks. Walking to the elevator, I felt something brush against my leg. I looked down and saw that I had stepped on a broken bottle. I winced in pain and looked up at my friend. She looked at me with annoyance and said, "Great, now we have to deal with this."
She walked ahead of me. I was left behind, hobbling and bleeding from my leg. I felt hurt and ignored, but I didn't want to ruin the night, so I tried to push it aside and have fun.
We had a great time eating and laughing as the night went on. I had almost forgotten about the incident earlier until my friend said, "Don't be clumsy. You did enough damage. We don't want to cause a scene and ruin our reputation with the hotel." I was shocked. I felt used and unimportant like I was just a prop in her life.
The following day, my friend acted as if nothing had happened. She didn't ask me how I was feeling, and she didn't apologize for her behavior. I knew then that our friendship had changed, and I needed to learn to respect myself.
I realized then that she wasn't the friend I thought she was. She was selfish and self-centered, and she didn't care about me. It was a hard lesson to learn, but it was one that I needed to learn to respect myself.
After that incident, I started to focus on my own well-being. I realized I was worth more than a friend who treated me like a disposable object. I began to stand up for myself more and stopped putting myself in situations where I didn't feel safe or respected.
I also started to make new friends who shared my values and respected me for who I was. When surrounded by people who treated me well, I felt better about myself and my life.
It wasn't easy to let go of my old friend, but it was necessary for my own growth and happiness. I learned that sometimes, the people we think are our friends are really just using us for their own benefit. It's essential to be aware of that and to put ourselves first.
Ultimately, I realized that the best way to respect myself was to surround myself with people who treated me with kindness and compassion. I learned that I didn't need to sacrifice my well-being for the sake of a friendship and that true friends are the ones who will always put your safety and happiness first. They genuinely care about me no matter what. And I do the same for them.
You learned your life lesson unexpectedly and I feel fortunate it happened before it was too late to know who my true friends are.
