A Christmas Night

Brightness within the dark

By Nandana RRPublished 10 months ago 3 min read

On a snowy night, I walked past a house full of christmas lights. Carol songs filled the silence, laughter and giggles echoed across the streets. Sparkly stars enveloped the christmas trees, Yellow, blue and red glitters, lighting up the dark sky of mutiny.

"It looks like its christmas", I thought. As I opened the gates, I recognized many faces. some of them were just who I used to smile everyday, some of them were just distant family and some, were my family. As I sat next to my loved ones, I poured a glass of whiskey, put two large cubes of ice, and saw it melt slowly into the whsikey, and blended with it smoothly.

"Wish I could blend like that with life. Why is life such a miserable term. Love, Hate, Care, it has a power of its own isnt it?. But, "life", it seems so easy, when thats the heaviest among the all. Weird isnt it?", I said.

"There you go, mumbling stuffs which is not necessary at all", replied my mother.

I stared up at the sky, studded with endless stars. Distant fireworks looked beautiful, a few constellations which made shapes as its called.

"It has been a long day everyone. Morning till now, its been hectic. I hope you all are happy . As for me, Iam as usual, same old, same old".

"Go back to your home, buy some cakes, wine and celebrate christmas with your friends and new people. dont tangle up with this old gang. We are far too old for this celebration. You must be excited, and here you are, blabbing usual things as this is a normal day", said my mom, all in one breath. I can feel disappointment in her voice.

"Really? I dont feel any excitement at all. It feels like the innocence was swept away when reality stepped in", I said.

"There is no such thing as the fear of reality, when you have a strong sense of conscience about what you are doing. You have always been a diligent child, then why waste your time by looking at all the meloncholic parts of life. Christmas is like a rebirth. You have plenty of time to figure everything out child", said dad in a very serious tone. He hates when I nag about life being sad and boring. He witholds strong sense of self which I lack as days pass by. "I never knew you all thought so highly about me, but iam not. I regret plenty of choices, actions. But it seems life is making me feel all plain and bland, like a soup with no flavours. Cant I just stay here and enjoy talking to all of you and celebrate the so-called christmas?", I uttered.

"No. You should have a life outside of this world. Its high time you move on. You have built a beautiful life on your own. There is no life without setbacks, but we have to endure it anyways. Never let temporary situations take the best out of you. Life has its own course", said mom in a calm voice which made me feel at home. "Now get up, talk to new people, let them in and have it as always you wanted. You are worthy of everything my child".

"As you wish. I cant hear the term "life" anymore. I feel like Iam having a seizure because of that. I will drop by tomorrow. Will bring flowers and our favorite snacks for company", I said, and dusted off the dirt from my mothers name.

I closed the gate of the cemetery and took a one last look at all of them. Resting.

I walked past the same house with christmas lights. I saw a sign board on the door which said,

"Christmas special meal: AVAILABLE FOR EVERYONE WHO KNOCKS THE DOOR TWICE.

P.S.Santa clause will grant a wish who helps with the chores".

As I knocked the door twice, I know I will be given a heartfelt meal. I might get a wish as well, but what do I wish for when everything I want is something I can never get. Maybe a chritsmas cake is a good wish. I dont remember when I had the last one. Maybe mom will be happy because I never had one since she left me in this world of entrapment.

Still when excitement knocks you twice, You close the doors with all your distress, and, destroy the present you, for the future you, which, never understood the "real you".
