Barcelona Clinch La Liga Title as Yamal Shines in Victory Over Espanyol
Barcelona have officially reclaimed the La Liga title after an impressive 2-0 win over Espanyol, with two matches still left in the season. The victory came just days after their El Clasico triumph over Real Madrid. Needing only two more points to secure the title, 17-year-old Lamine Yamal stepped up and delivered a standout performance to seal the deal. He scored one goal and assisted another, ensuring Barcelona’s 28th La Liga crown in style.
Yamal, who had a quiet first half at the RCDE Stadium, came alive in the second half to lead the charge. His creativity and energy brought Barcelona back to their attacking rhythm. His goal in the 53rd minute, created after a brilliant one-two with Dani Olmo, broke the deadlock. Fermin Lopez then sealed the victory in added time with a second goal, also assisted by Yamal.

With this result, Barcelona now sit at the top of the table with 85 points from 36 matches. Real Madrid, who were last season’s champions with 36 La Liga titles, trail behind with 78 points. Hansi Flick’s side not only claimed the league title but also completed a domestic treble this season, having already won the Spanish Super Cup and the Copa del Rey — both times defeating Real Madrid.
Flick, who took charge this season, made a few changes to the starting lineup from their last match — the dramatic 4-3 win against Real Madrid in El Clasico. Despite Barcelona dominating possession early on, it was Espanyol who got the first chance. In just the fourth minute, Urco Gonzalez fired a low shot just wide of the post. Moments later, the match was paused briefly due to a security issue outside the stadium involving a car driving near the crowd.
Barcelona had their first real chance in the 13th minute, when Robert Lewandowski attempted a shot from the edge of the box, but it lacked power. Espanyol replied with a strong attempt of their own, forcing a save from Barcelona's goalkeeper, Wojciech Szczęsny. Despite several attacks from both sides, the first half ended goalless.

The breakthrough finally came early in the second half. Yamal, showing maturity beyond his years, glided past defenders and exchanged a pass with Dani Olmo before slotting the ball into the net at the far post. Espanyol’s hopes of a comeback were dashed in the 80th minute when their defender Leandro Cabrera was sent off. He received a red card after a dangerous challenge that hit Yamal in the stomach. The referee made the decision after consulting the VAR.
With Espanyol reduced to 10 men, Barcelona kept pressing. In the sixth minute of added time, substitute Fermin Lopez made it 2-0. The goal was set up by Yamal, who provided a perfect pass into Lopez’s path. It was a fitting end to the match and a perfect night for Barcelona fans.
This season has been a breakout year for Yamal. In 53 appearances across all competitions, he has scored 17 goals and delivered 25 assists. At just 17 years old, he has already won five titles between club and country. He is proving to be one of the brightest young stars in world football.
Real Madrid showed good sportsmanship by congratulating their arch-rivals on social media, acknowledging Barcelona’s return to the top. With two games still left, Barcelona can now focus on ending the season strongly, knowing that the league title is already theirs. The win not only highlights their dominance in Spanish football once again but also marks the start of a promising new era under coach Hansi Flick.
