June 2025 turned out to be one of the toughest periods in Shreyas Iyer’s cricketing career. Within a span of just 10 days, the Indian middle-order batsman and captain suffered two heartbreaking losses in major finals. First, on June 3, he led Punjab Kings in the IPL 2025 final, where they fell short of clinching their maiden title. Then, shortly after, his leadership with SoBo Mumbai Falcons in the Mumbai T20 League 2025 ended in another defeat in the final match. These back-to-back setbacks clearly left a mark on Shreyas, who couldn’t hide his disappointment in the post-match presentation.

Speaking candidly after the Mumbai T20 League final, Iyer said, “It is very stressful. Many things go through the mind after a defeat. It feels like a stab in the back, and I don’t like it at all.” His emotions reflected the pain of coming so close to silverware twice, only to be denied in the final hurdle both times. Despite his personal anguish, Shreyas remained composed and respectful in acknowledging the efforts of his team.

He praised the SoBo Mumbai Falcons for their consistent performance throughout the tournament, saying, “I don’t want to focus on any one incident. Our team performed brilliantly throughout the tournament and lost only one match. You cannot blame the players for any one defeat. It is like stabbing in the back, and I don’t like it at all.” These words not only expressed his frustration but also showed his loyalty and support for his teammates, refusing to let a single game define their efforts.

Moreover, Shreyas took a moment to motivate the younger players in the squad, many of whom were playing on a big stage for the first time. He stated, “Losing in the final is naturally disappointing, but these players should be proud of their performance. They don’t have much experience, and it is not easy to play in front of 20,000 spectators. I have also gone through that phase. Mistakes happen in nervousness, but these experiences make you stronger. Next year these players will return with more confidence.” His message was one of resilience and belief in growth through setbacks—an important life lesson for any young athlete.

In the final, SoBo Mumbai Falcons batted first after losing the toss. They put up a competitive total of 157 runs in 20 overs, largely thanks to an impressive half-century by Mayuresh Tandel. However, it was not enough on the day. The Mumbai South Central Maratha Royals chased down the target with four balls remaining, securing the title and leaving the Falcons and their captain heartbroken once again. The Royals' balanced performance with both bat and ball throughout the match was a major factor in their win, and they deservedly lifted the trophy.

Though the result was not in Shreyas Iyer’s favor, his calm and mature handling of consecutive losses won admiration from fans and experts alike. His ability to uplift his team, appreciate supporters, and show leadership even in defeat highlights his character. While 2025 may not have brought titles to his name, it has surely shown his strength as a leader under pressure. For Iyer, these back-to-back final defeats are not the end—they’re just another chapter in a career full of promise, perseverance, and future opportunities to rise again.
