Rohit and Kohli

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, two of the most iconic players in the history of Indian cricket, have now stepped away from two formats of the game. After officially retiring from T20 Internationals following India's triumphant win in the T20 World Cup in 2024, both veterans recently announced their retirement from Test cricket during the IPL 2025 season. This marks a significant transition for Indian cricket, as two of its pillars prepare to wind down their international careers. However, fans still have something to look forward to, as both Rohit and Kohli are expected to continue representing India in One Day Internationals (ODIs), possibly until the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup.

The Indian cricket team is set to play three ODIs and three T20Is against Australia in a limited-overs series scheduled for October-November 2025. While both players will not be a part of the T20 squad due to retirement, they are likely to be in the ODI squad. Interestingly, Cricket Australia (CA) is reportedly preparing to give a special farewell to both legends during this upcoming series. According to media reports, CA wants to acknowledge the contributions of these two cricketing greats with a fitting tribute if this indeed turns out to be their final tour of Australia as Indian cricketers.

Todd Greenberg, the CEO of Cricket Australia, confirmed this in a recent interview. He said that if this ends up being the last time Indian stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli tour Australia, CA will do everything it can to honor them. “This may be the last time Virat and Rohit Sharma are seen playing in our country. If that happens — and who knows if it will — we want to make sure we give them a great farewell,” Greenberg said. His words reflect the immense respect and admiration the cricketing world holds for the duo.

Rohit Sharma, who led India to the T20 World Cup win in 2024, has recently spoken about his desire to play in the 2027 ODI World Cup. As a top-order batter and one of the most successful captains in limited-overs cricket, Rohit still has much to offer to Indian cricket in the 50-over format. On the other hand, Virat Kohli continues to be a mainstay in the ODI team with a staggering average of around 58 — a testament to his consistent brilliance. The 2027 World Cup could be the final chapter in their illustrious careers, and fans across the world are hoping to see them one last time on the grand stage.

Both players have left behind a legacy that is hard to match. Kohli, known for his passion and hunger, has redefined modern-day batting, while Rohit, with his elegance and powerful stroke play, has been a cornerstone of India’s batting lineup for over a decade. Their decision to retire from Tests and T20Is signals a new phase for the Indian team, but their presence in the ODI format will continue to inspire the younger generation.

As the farewell plans take shape, Indian fans will surely watch the upcoming India-Australia series with emotion and pride. While nothing has been officially confirmed yet about the farewell ceremony, the fact that Cricket Australia is considering such a gesture speaks volumes about the impact of Rohit and Kohli beyond borders. Whether this is their final series in Australia or not, the cricketing world will certainly cherish every moment they take the field together once more.
