On June 4, 2025, a tragic stampede occurred outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, overshadowing the celebrations following Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) winning their maiden IPL title. The incident claimed the lives of at least 11 people and left many others injured. What was supposed to be a moment of joy for RCB fans turned into a heartbreaking tragedy. The stampede reportedly happened as a large crowd gathered outside the stadium during a celebratory event, leading to uncontrollable chaos.

In the aftermath, a new controversy has emerged involving Indian cricket superstar and RCB’s most iconic player, Virat Kohli. A complaint has been lodged against him by social activist HM Venkatesh at the Cubbon Park Police Station in Bengaluru. While no First Information Report (FIR) has been registered yet, the complaint has drawn significant attention due to the serious nature of the allegations made against Kohli.

According to Venkatesh, Kohli allegedly played a role in promoting what he describes as “gambling” through the IPL. In his view, the IPL, rather than being a legitimate sporting competition, has turned into a platform for betting and unethical activities. He argues that Kohli, being the face of RCB and one of the most influential figures in Indian cricket, has actively contributed to glorifying the IPL in ways that attract mass gatherings under unsafe conditions. Venkatesh claims that this indirect promotion led to the uncontrolled crowd that caused the stampede, and he demands legal action against Kohli and RCB.

He stated, “IPL is not a game but a form of gambling, which has corrupted the sanctity of cricket. Virat Kohli is the biggest face of RCB and he is a part of this gambling. His influence led to the gathering and eventual tragedy. An FIR should be registered, and appropriate legal steps must be taken.” The statement has ignited a fierce debate in cricketing and legal circles, especially given Kohli’s standing as one of the most respected players in the history of the game.

As per a report by news agency ANI, police authorities have confirmed receiving the complaint. However, they have also clarified that it will be considered as part of the ongoing broader investigation into the stampede. There has been no official confirmation on whether a separate FIR will be registered specifically targeting Kohli.

Meanwhile, police have already arrested four individuals linked to the event. These include Nikhil Sosale, a senior officer from RCB, along with three members from the event management team responsible for organizing the fan celebration. According to reports, they were detained at Kempegowda International Airport in a joint operation conducted by the Cubbon Park Police and the Central Crime Branch (CCB) on the morning of June 6.

Following their arrest, the suspects underwent a mandatory medical examination before being produced before the Sessions Court. The court has sent them to 14 days of judicial custody as the investigation continues. Authorities are examining various factors that contributed to the chaos outside the stadium, including lack of crowd control, ticket distribution issues, and mismanagement by organizers.

The unfortunate stampede has brought a dark cloud over what was supposed to be a historic moment for RCB and their fans. While the team finally secured their first-ever IPL trophy, the celebrations have been marred by tragedy, legal scrutiny, and mounting criticism over event safety. The involvement of a high-profile player like Virat Kohli in a complaint related to the incident adds a new dimension to the ongoing probe, and all eyes will be on how the authorities respond in the coming days.
