Big news about IND vs ENG series, ECB took a big decision after the controversy over the name of the trophy
IND vs ENG

The upcoming five-match Test series between India and England, beginning on June 20, 2025, has drawn attention not just for the cricketing rivalry but also for the controversy surrounding the name of the trophy. Originally known as the Pataudi Trophy, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) had proposed renaming it as the *Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy*, to honor two legends—Sachin Tendulkar and James Anderson, who are the highest run-scorer and wicket-taker in Test cricket, respectively. However, the idea met with widespread criticism, leading to a revised decision that seeks to honor the historical legacy of the Pataudi family in both Indian and English cricket.
Following the backlash, the ECB, in consultation with stakeholders, decided that while the trophy may bear a new name, the contribution of the Pataudi family will not be forgotten. Instead of entirely replacing the Pataudi Trophy, the *Pataudi Medal* will now be awarded to the winning captain of the Test series. This is seen as a compromise that preserves the name and significance of the Pataudi family in India-England cricket history while also acknowledging the remarkable careers of Tendulkar and Anderson.
The backlash stemmed from strong public and expert opinion. Prominent cricket figures, including former India captain Sunil Gavaskar, voiced their disapproval of renaming the Pataudi Trophy. Critics argued that the Pataudi family had played a significant historical role in both Indian and English cricket, and their legacy deserved to remain at the heart of this bilateral series. Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi, the grandfather of actor Saif Ali Khan and father of Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, played Test cricket for both England and India. Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi later became one of India’s most charismatic captains. Their influence in shaping cricketing ties between the two nations was seen as irreplaceable.

Interestingly, it was Sachin Tendulkar himself who intervened to preserve the Pataudi name. According to reports, Tendulkar approached the ECB and suggested that the Pataudi legacy must be honored in some form. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah also supported the move. In light of their inputs, the ECB accepted the proposal to introduce the *Pataudi Medal* rather than completely rebrand the series. A formal announcement about the revised structure is expected to be made on June 19, a day before the first Test begins at Headingley, Leeds.
The initial plan to unveil the *Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy* was scheduled during the World Test Championship (WTC) final at Lord’s, but it was postponed following the tragic Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, out of respect for the victims. That delay allowed more time for reflection and dialogue among stakeholders, ultimately leading to the decision to retain the Pataudi legacy in a new format.
This development highlights the importance of history and legacy in cricket. While Tendulkar and Anderson undoubtedly deserve recognition for their remarkable contributions to the game, cricket fans and historians alike value the deep-rooted traditions that shape such rivalries. The Pataudi family’s unique connection to both countries adds a layer of richness to the series, and the decision to award a Pataudi Medal reflects a balanced approach that honors both the present and the past.
As the first ball is bowled in Leeds, players will not only compete for runs and wickets but also for a symbol of cricket’s enduring legacy—the Pataudi Medal. The move is likely to be appreciated by traditionalists and modern fans alike, reinforcing the idea that cricket is more than just a game; it is a history shared across generations and borders.
