2025 Red Sox Season Begins Today

So, the 2025 Red Sox begins today. They will begin the start of the season in Texas with the team playing the Texas Rangers for a 4 game series.

After being up and down in 2024, the team finished the season in 3rd place. Although this was an improvement from 2023; I believe they are on track to win the division this year. Since the season is made up of 162 games, there are many things that can happen. For instance, there could be injuries or a lack of chemistry.

With that being said, the team was active in the off season.

In December, the team finally found an ace in a trade with the White Sox. Since the team traded Chris Sale, they haven’t had an ace. Hopefully, that is about to change. The team landed Garrett Crochet for two first round picks.

With Crochet’s low salary, they also were able to get a few other deals complete. However, even with this signing, they weren’t able to get an extension done with Crochet before opening day. Although Crochet is under the team’s control until the end of the 2026 season, I hope the team will be able to sign him in the future. However, Crochet didn’t do well in Spring training, so, time will tell how he does in the regular season.

In addition, they signed Walker Buehler for more pitching depth.

Also, they were able to acquire Alex Bregman and Aroldis Chapman.

They also lost Chris Martin and Kelsey Jansen from the bullpen in the off season.

With both additions and subtraction, I am hopeful this team will return to the post season. Fingers crossed!

MLB Rule Changes

Of course, every year there are changes. However this year, there are only 2 minor changes.

So, the first change involves a modification to a rule in 2023. The rule requires the defensive team must have no more than 2 infielders on either side of second base prior to a pitch being thrown. Additionally, the infielder must be standing and cannot shift into the shallow outfield.

With this new rule, the batting team can accept the result of this rule and the batter would be granted a free base which would enable the other runners on base to advance one base. Also, the player who violated the rule would be charged with an error.

The second rule involves running through a base other than first base on a force play. For instance, if there are runners on first and third base with two outs and a ball is hit on the ground, the runner going to second base may opt to run straight through the base rather than sliding into the base with the hope of beating the throw to the base.

Meanwhile, if the runner beats the throw, the player could be caught in a rundown and be tagged out. However, it would enable the other runners to score on a play before the third out was recorded.

The rule change gives the Umpire the power to call out the runner for missing a base even if the player beat the throw.

In my opinion, this rule sounds confusing and could result in a lot of manager challenges and result in a delay in the game. Also, this could slow the game down.

Of course, time will tell how these new rules impact the game.

2025 Red Sox Season Predictions

Indeed, the start of a season begins hope for a positive outcome.

Because there were a lot of moves in the off season, I am hopeful the team will win the division this year. At the same time, many sports books have the 2025 Red Sox favored to win the division.
