What Is The Meaning Of Self-Care

why does self-care mean what it means

By Louise BarracoPublished 6 days ago 8 min read

When we think of self-care a million different meanings come to mind don’t they? Yes they do because each person has a different meaning for what self-care means to them. Some people might say that self-care is being alone with their own thoughts, some might say it is going out with friends to lunch or dinner or even a coffee date. Some might even say self-care is getting their nails done or their hair, or even taking a bubble bath? But what exactly is the meaning of the word self-care? Self-care is the practice of taking action to improve one's own health and it is the practice of taking an active role in improving one's well- being and happiness in particular in times of stress. Now those are the definitions I found when I looked it up, this in turn means doing anything that makes you feel good is a form of self-care. Self- care is something that has always been around and it is something that will always be around considering our lives become more stressful as the years go on, at least that is what I notice.

Self-care is anything that you want it to be that can calm your mind and your nerves all at the same time. If that means, cleaning or cleaning out things in your home then so be it, if that means getting outside in the outdoors no matter the weather then so be it, if that means getting pampered in some way then go for it. Sure the official definition of self-care is in this post but it really is whatever you feel your definition of self-care is to you. That is what matters when it comes to self-care and how it makes you feel when you do it. Everyone’s version of self-care for themselves is different because we all have different stresses in life so it is only natural that we would have different ways of de-stressing too. Self-care means what it means because it gives you a sense of I am not the only one that is going through what I am going through. Everyone goes through things, they might not all be the same things but in terms of self-care and doing it for ourselves we all do it in our lives. Yes for different reasons, sure but it is done all the time no matter the reason.

Self-care is something that makes people feel good and gives their bodies and minds a break. When we give our bodies and minds a break, in the form of self-care, how do we feel? We feel rejuvenated and like we can take on the world. That is the way I look at it anyway, has anyone felt different in the last couple of years in the form of what they do for self-care for themselves or if they do it or not do it? I have found that since the covid 19 pandemic self-care has been at the forefront of everyone’s minds in order to help them get through life and relax a little more. Now I know covid seems as though it is over but that doesn’t mean that we should stop doing our self-care things. If anything we should be keeping up with them more because, the better we feel throughout our lives the more we get accomplished in them. Which means the more we do self-care in a week or a month the better we feel. I find the more I don’t do self-care things at least once a week the more stressed out I am but if I do something for self-care at least once throughout the week I feel much more relaxed and I feel as though I can get more done, on my blogging journey.

When I say I get more done on my blogging journey I mean, not writing all the time. I mean making it a point to take time off, for example, I write maybe two weeks out of the month or sometimes once. I am only posting once a week, three weeks out of the month so I am writing three posts a month. So if I can do that in a two or three day span for the rest of the time, I am reading, or getting outside or watching tv or re-organizing something that I have let go over the last few weeks, or even months. When I re-organize something and clean it all up I feel great about it, because it is organized and looks so much better than it did before. Seeing things organized and cleaned up makes me feel so much better about the way I am living my life and how I feel about myself. In terms of blogging I am much more organized because I am only posting once a week, and taking the last week of every month off. I have finally got a great thing going for me in terms of organizing everything too. I write once or twice a week, prep videos for the things I am posting then schedule it on youtube to post on the certain day I am acfor tually going to post the blog post. Which in turn is a lot easier for me because I am not seeing everything all over the place but I know it is done and ready to go when the time is right.

When I am organized like this I feel as though I can accomplish so much more because I am busy but I don’t feel overwhelmed by it. When you do self-care you are taking out that overwhelm that you feel so much throughout your week or even the month. That is why I take a week off a month when I blog, and in that week, I do anything I want, like get outside all day if its nice, or watch television or read. The list can go on and on. So find something in your life that you can do to calm your mind and your body and that is what self-care is. This can be anything that you want it to be. For me at the stage of life I am in now, that is re-organizing my room, reading, watching television, making friendship bracelets, and getting outside if it's sunny. Yes it's winter and cold but I love the sun, it makes me feel good so if it is sunny I don’t care how cold it is I will get outside in it even for twenty minutes, doing that boosts my mood ten fold. So why don’t you try these things for yourself and see what happens in your life.

Self-care is the way a person relaxes and recharges, so it is not going to be the same for every person. Self-care means what it means because it is a way for you to give life back to the hobbies you enjoy doing, and or the things that bring you joy that aren’t job related or being a wife, father or homemaker. Doing things that you enjoy just for the sake of enjoyment and the satisfaction and happiness you get out of them, is a great form of self-care. So the reason why self-care means what it means is it is giving you an escape of sorts, from your busy everyday life, so that you can slow down and relax in any way that works for you. So this means you can do any self-care that you enjoy. When we hear the term self-care so many things come to mind don’t they? Yes they do, because we all relax in a different way. Self-care means what it means because each of us have different versions of it.

The meaning of self-care is different for everyone. It means what it means because everyone relaxes and recharges in a different way. Some people need to be alone and in silence others need to be around friends and things that are loud. It means what it means, for each person because it is how they relax and regroup. Self-care means what it means because it is the way you take care of yourself and your mental health, not the way others do it for you. We are all taught to take care of ourselves in a way that works for us, at least that is what I feel self-care means to me. What about you, what does self-care mean to you? Think about that, the next time you are trying to relax and re-group. After you do this how do you feel? I feel great after I do a day or so of self-care, even just an hour of self-care. I feel great, what about you?

Doing a bit of self-care each week is something everyone should strive for, why you ask? Well to give ourselves renewed energy to get through life. When we don’t do self-care how does our energy feel? Most people would say that when they don’t do self-care even once a week for a little bit their energy feels depleted and they feel as though they never get a break. But if you do some form of self-care once a week you have renewed energy and you feel as though you are getting some form of a break. So what self-care means is take the break when you feel that you need it. When you do this you will feel so much better as you live the life you are living and doing the things that you are doing. The better you feel about the things you are doing the more you will want to do them.

So self-care has a number of different meanings as this post describes. The question is what is the best form of self-care for you and the way that you live your life? Do you consider the self-care that you do part of the hobbies that you do in your life? Have you ever thought of your self-care as a hobby? If so, has it given you more incentive to put self-care into your life? I look at the self-care that I do in my life as my hobbies and when I do that I feel like I get more out of it, in terms of relaxation and something that I enjoy doing to clear my mind. The more that I clear my mind the better I feel which in turn means I will be doing more self-care. I have actually done a lot more self-care over the last few years and I enjoy it so much that I won’t ever stop.

Self -care does not just mean one thing that you do in life helps you recharge and relax. It means that a number of different things can contribute to the way a person relaxes and recharges for themselves. Sometimes watching television can not only help productivity but help you relax as well, or listening to music. It all depends on what self-care means to the person doing it and how it makes them feel. Each person is different and we all need to remember this, the more we remember that each person’s self-care is different the more we will get out of it with other people as well as on our own self-care journeys.

Self-care can be anything that we want it to be, which means it can mean anything we want it too indirectly. So depending on the person, figure out what self-care means to you and do that form of self-care for yourself. When you do this you will be glad that you did and you will get so much more out of your life and the way you relax and regroup too. What is the meaning of self-care to you and why does it mean what it means to you? Think about that, the next time you do self-care for yourself.
