The Forgotten Tale of Pantherus
Book 1 – Exile and Vigil – Prologue
“What was told in light was but a shadow. What you now read is the hidden scroll, the forgotten truth of Pantherus and the Eye.”
***
Long before the fall of Thundera—before the Eye was ever set within the Sword—the felines lived in bondage on the world of the Rats. Bound in chains and darkness, they labored in mines, in stone, in fields, and among flocks for the ruthless king, Ratilla II. Their dignity was stripped, and their hope nearly extinguished.
But in those days, there lived a wise feline named Pantherus. He carried within him a vision of freedom and a whisper from the Great Spirit—truth, justice, honor, and loyalty. In secret, he taught these virtues to his kin, reminding them they were not born to be slaves, but chosen to be witnesses to something greater. His teachings spread like fire in the night, igniting hope and courage in hearts long broken.
The Great Spirit was pleased, and through Pantherus gave a gift—a sign of covenant: the Eye, a sacred jewel of sight beyond sight, carved to guide the felines from slavery to freedom, through exile and trials, toward a glorious destiny.
Thus, through the Eye, the Spirit led Pantherus and wrought wonders. Chains were broken, captors were defied, and the felines fled through the stars.
Though their journey was perilous, the Spirit revealed hidden paths and gave the felines strength whenever despair drew near.
At last, they came to a new world, which they named Thundera—a land of rivers and forests, of plenty and warmth, and of a mineral of great fire coveted across the stars: Thundrillium. There, in Thundera, they built a kingdom of virtue and peace, and there the felines prospered, multiplied, and flourished.
For a time, peace endured. The felines came to be known as Thunderans, proud and noble, and the Eye stood as a symbol of freedom and a memorial of their covenant—for it was the gem through which the Spirit spoke. Temples rose, congregations sang in honor of the Spirit of the Eye, and Pantherus was remembered as their liberator.
From among them arose the ThunderCats—noble knights sworn to the Spirit’s code, to guard the Eye, and to serve Thunderans everywhere.
But peace bred forgetfulness. In time, younger generations turned from the Spirit to mysticism and hidden knowledge. They no longer sought the Spirit of the Eye, but the power and secrets of the Eye.
Thunderan sorcerers inscribed their learning in the Book of Omens, locked it with the spell‑forged Key of Thundera, and entrusted both to priests, who made the Eye their sole pursuit: a knowledge to be guarded, a mystery to be mastered, a power to be wielded.
Yet while they thought themselves secure, greedy neighbors watched. Murderous races hungered. Jackals, Vultures, Lizards, Monkians, and Rats—guided by dark spirits they did not know—ventured from their worlds to plunder for wealth and power. Beholding the prosperity of Thundera, they envied its riches and coveted its Thundrillium.
This is the lost story—the tale untold by the legend. It began with Pantherus, the forgotten liberator, and it continues with all who rise as Knights of Thundera. Yet even now, his warning lingers:
“The Eye was given to guide, not to be possessed—and those who forget will find themselves judged. For to those who abandon the covenant, the Eye becomes a mirror of curse as well as promise.”
And so, when the skies darkened over Thundera, the judgment of the broken covenant fell in fire.
***
“Thus the hidden tale returns to light, and the covenant speaks again. In the ashes of Thundera, the charge of Pantherus awaits its heirs.”
