Every night the moon shone with subtle variations in brightness, as if asking an unspoken question. Poets believed the moon wanted to know whether humans understood their own light. Astronomers mocked the idea until one night the moon dimmed for the first time in centuries. Only after people collectively paused, reflecting on their place in the universe, did it brighten again. Some said the moon had finally received its answer. Others believed it had simply decided to wait a little longer.
