The Girl Who Swallowed the Sea

A mermaid’s curse was never about love — it was about hunger.

By GoldenSpeechPublished 3 months ago 1 min read

She was not a princess, not even human — just a girl who envied the ocean too much. When the sea whispered to her, she answered by swallowing saltwater every night until her veins turned brine. They said she was cursed when her voice changed — not gone, but deep, echoing like waves.

As her town drowned in tides and storms, she sang lullabies that calmed the waves, until they began singing back. Soon, her hair tangled with seaweed, her heartbeat synchronized with the current, and one morning she was gone — or rather, she became the sea.

Sailors now say when the water hums before a storm, it’s her — warning them. Not out of kindness, but hunger. After all, she’s been swallowing ships ever since.
