The doctor arrived shortly after they managed to get her fever down. He checked over her and declared that she was out of danger but that she needed to stay in bed for the time being.
Jason listened to his instructions carefully. He didn't want to unintentionally put her in danger by making a careless mistake.
Doctor Abram told them to keep her cool, but not overly so. To make sure she gets plenty of liquids and only broth when she wakes,. He opens his case and pulls out a bottle of fever-reducing medicine that will help her sleep better. He showed them how to administer it while she was unconscious.
Once he left, Jason watched as Mrs. Thorn did as the doctor instructed. He felt helpless as he stood by and observed as they changed her sheets and turned away when they went to change her sleepware. Once he knew she was clean, comfortable, and in good hands, he left to take care of business.
Jason had just entered his study and sat down to look over some shipping documents when his door was thrown open and in walked a tall, willowy figure dressed in a Gucci pant suit. Her once black hair was peppered with gray streaks, and her once beautiful features were now lined with crows feet, even though she tried to hide them with Botox injections.
"Hello mother." He said it blandly, as if she barged into his study on a regular basis. When, in fact, his mother came very rarely to see him. Since his father's passing, she has spent more time going on trips and spending time with her friends. She had only recently decided that he needed to marry and have children.
She walked over to one of his chairs and sat down without responding to his greeting until she chose to.
Jason tried not to roll his eyes at her antics. He was more than used to her antics, seeing as he had grown up seeing them on a regular basis. Though she had not been the one to raise him, the family had nannies for such things. That would probably explain why they didn't have a close bond. He couldn't help thinking absently.
"Did you really think you were going to get away with hanging up on me, Jason?" Lisa Carrow said snidely.
Jason could only glower at her tone before responding. "No, but I held out some hope that it would deter you from coming to bother me, but I guess I can't get that lucky."
She gasped at his words in faux outrage, but he knew better than to buy into her pretend anger. It was all an act to gain his sympathy or something else that she might want.
"How did I get such an ungrateful son?" His mother sighed exaggeratedly. She looked at her son with a pout on her dark red lips. He just returned her gaze with an arched eyebrow that said clearly that she needed to get to the point so he could get back to work.
His mother seemed to take the hint because she cleared her throat before speaking again. "I have brought some photos of the woman I think you might find to your liking. She pulled out a yellow envelope and placed it on his desk before sliding it towards him with her red-tipped, well-manicured nails.
Jason felt a momentary feeling of panic but didn't let it show on his face. Instead, he took a deep breath before pushing the envelope back toward her. "I already told you that I am not interested in looking at the woman you have picked out." He states bluntly, not wishing to sugarcoat anything.
Lisa looked at her son, feeling the frustration of his stubbornness welling up inside her. This boy didn't seem to understand that what she did was for the good of the entire family. Lisa Carrow knew she had not been the most nurturing mother, but she had tried to do her best for her family and live up to the Carrow name. But for some reason, her only son couldn't see that. Lisa was so lost in thought that she almost missed his next words too.
"I don't need to look for a bride; I have already found someone I am interested in." Jason did not elaborate on it further with his mother for fear of giving away too much too soon.
Lisa perked up at hearing those words. "You have someone? Who? Where have you been hiding her?" She asked, trying to sound casual, but Lisa knew her voice sounded more excited than she intended, but she couldn't help herself. This was the first time she had heard of it, and she had just talked to him a few hours ago.
Instead of answering her questions, though, Jason held a hand to stop her barrage of questions.
"I have not finalized the details, but when I do, you will be the first to know." He said dismissively. "Now if you will allow me to get back to work, I have a lot to do and not a lot of time for idol chit chat."
Lisa knew a dismissal when she heard it. Getting up from her seat, she walked to the door, and before leaving, she left him with some parting words. "Remember, Jason, that you are the last remaining male heir of our family. Please take this seriously, son."
Jason's dark green eyes fell upon his mother once again, but they felt chilling and cold as his gaze pinned her to the spot, his normally full lips thinning in a look of displeasure before he responded in a deadly soft voice.
"Yes, so you keep reminding me regularly. I will find one when I have the time. Right now, I am trying to get the business in order my father left behind. I am still young and do not see the need to rush or push myself into something that I might regret later."
Lisa knew there would be no arguing with him at this point, so she left it alone for now. She already had the distinct impression that she had overstayed her welcome.
"Alright, I will let the elders know that you have a bride in mind." With that, she departed as quickly as she came, leaving Jason feeling like a whirlwind just blew through his office.
He breathed a sigh of relief once she was gone. Jason had not intended to say anything to his mother about his plans for Rory and himself, but he had panicked and blurted out the first thing that came to his mind to put her off the topic.
Jason couldn't help groaning as he covered his face with his hands. He messed up big time, but now all he could do was hope that everything worked out for the best, and he feverently prayed that Rory Whitney would agree to his idea for both their sakes.
