Taking Living > Life For Granted

"Do you think life is taken for granted?" A small voice asked. Irellis was a small Fey who was often much smaller than the rest. Her starlight silver hair was wild with curls and her little cotton dress made her look like a tiny snowflake. She lay with her arms folded on a young woman's shoulder, staring out into the world that was designed on a scale too big for her.

"No," The young woman responded softly, with a light laugh. "I believe living is taken for granted."

Irellis made a light noise that sounded like a burst of wind sung over the rim of a bottle. "Is that not the same thing? What do you mean?"

"I mean... couldn't imagine what it would be like to live - With no sense of automation. What it feels like to choose to breathe. What a fight against gravity might feel like. I cant even comprehend what it takes to remind my muscles to move, my heart to beat." Her eyes twinkled as she stared up at the plain blue sky. Her hair wisping through the wind, while her feet lazily dangled from the swing. "To have life is just as automated as those little things... but without them, you cant live. It's not life that is often taken for granted though it could be... its living that is almost always taken for granted."

Irellis shook out her wings and swung into a sitting position on the young womans shoulder. Her nameless human friend... the more she spoke to her, the more Irellis was intrigued.

"What it would take to move every nerve in my body, to move my receptors... To make my wings flap and to resist viruses." Irellis added, thinking out loud.

"Yes, what it takes to speak, to see, to hear, to smell? What it takes to taste. Its all apart of living. Its all basically automated for us and because of that - its all taken for granted.
