Old Enough
How can one night change a kid like me, or anyone for that matter? I don't know the answers but I do know I grew up a whole lot after sleeping over in what felt like another world entirely different than my own. Part of me wants to not think so much, to just be a kid who plays checkers, pretends to be a spy or astronaut and can forget all about the troubles this dumb ole world has. Something tells me those kind of days are soon over.

My best friend and her cousins know the time is coming for me to say goodbye, for now at least, when we see a new yellow taxi cab pull up and Paw-Paw stands up and waves to the driver. What a spectacle for the whole darn world, my big white Paw-Paw, post hernia procedure standing next to our small chestnut colored Pearl; heck, they even hugged.

While Clara and I were instructed to "play nice" with Jolly and Bertie outside it was far much harder than usual knowing Jolly wanted me to be his girlfriend. Why is it that the more a boy likes someone they act more stupid than ever? It's like the rooster walking around the barnyard crowing his fool head off, all puffed up about nothing while the hens busy themselves with more serious affairs like laying eggs and digging for worms. Soon as Jolly started showing off his cartwheels and tree climbing skills, us girls got busy drawing in the dirt with sticks. Clara and I were designing a house and Bertie, well, she just made circles with that, "I'm so bored I could die" look on her face. It was scorching hot but grown-ups want kids outside so they can have some peace. At least that's what Clara says.

As you know, I have had this notion that I am very smart; my teacher has repeatedly said this to my grandfather, Paw-Paw, and Pearl our housekeeper, cook, and my wanna-be Aunt for years. I have been told I talk too much and all summer have made it my goal to just shut my trap. I thought I was clever, getting a way with things like sneaking down to the rail road tracks which are super forbidden, studying hobos, or as my best hobo pal Hank says, "train jumpers", however Clara, Pearl's niece and my new best friend and blood sister says, "school smarts and street smarts is different."

To all my fellow creators
Why do you share your work and journey with your social network? Nobody cares about what you do in your life. ⏩This! How often do we come across this statement? The argument for instant gratification that we gain while sharing glimpses or content about our journeys being detrimental for us, in the long run, is completely valid. The validation that we crave from external realms often stems from a lower sense of self-esteem.
