The Skylands
I’ve heard stories about The Surface. Fantasies really, land as far as you can see, no edge in sight. My boots clanked loudly against the metal floor. The wind was strong today, I buckled my cap and slid my goggles over my eyes. I walked out of the passageway and was greeted by the railing that lined the outside of the city. I leaned over the railing and looked out at the endless expanse of clouds and sky. A flock of Morlos flew not far from me, the four-winged beasts were impressive. They were as big as a military crawler. You could probably fit a dozen men on its back and still have plenty of room to spare. Its long neck and wide mouth along with its half-dozen eyes made it an excellent hunter. How the people of the southern islands tamed those beasts is still something no one else has been able to figure out. Many consider them the rulers of the skies, even by themselves they are quite dangerous but their flocks usually number in the thirties or forties.

Chapter 2: Aegenwulf
Chapter 1: "The Whole: of the hole" may be found here: https://shopping-feedback.today/chapters/the-whole-wd4os0t5y My gloved finger hangs in the air right above the light switch. Something is off, like déjà vu only emptier. Haven’t I done this already?

The Whole
This was originally published in the Fiction community for Mackenzie Davis' Ekphrastic Challenge using the above photo by Oneg in the Arctic. But then I decided there was more of the story to tell, so I'm moving it to chapters, soon to be followed by chapter 2. If you've already read this, feel free to skip right over to the next chapter "Aegenwulf" (which means "wolf of the chief sea").

The Colors of Odds and Ends
Of course Carl was out the door first. The summer shower passed in the night but left the dew heavy on the grass. The morning sun sparkled with the possibilities of the day to the point of blinding Carl as he walked to the train station. The conversation he shared last night with Charlie and Rudy was short and the more he remembered it, the fact kept playing in his head that he was so tired at the end of the day, he couldn’t put his head around what the two of them needed. Instead he talked of his wants for them.

The Colors of Odds and Ends
Every night at midnight, the purple clouds came out to dance with the blushing sky. The dimples deepened as the sky turned slowly with the stars, their light falling soft as padded feet. Their dancing, just a breeze on top the trees waiting for the siblings to tire, end each summer night, and go to bed. Both were up past their bedtimes. Though for this summer, no curfew had been placed on them and nothing pressed to get them up in the morning.

The Entity Slayer
The two melanated small-statured women walked into the bar, and as heads turned, they looked ahead. The now, twenty-year-old Roya’Tea (Roya) Reign, walked up to the bartender and ordered a Pink Panties Martini, a code word for Elf’s Blood a tonic used for speaking to the Ancestors. Tika stood beside Roya with her back to the bar as she kept her eyes out for the shapeshifters, The Legion, that had been tailing them for the past five miles. “Ma, you sure this is going to help” Roya inquired as the bartender fixed the tonic. Tika knew there was nothing she could say to Roya right now that would calm her, so she did what she knew best, and just smiled.
