**The Power of Providence: Ruth Chapter 2**
The book of Ruth is a testament to the power of God's providence and the faithfulness of His people. In this second chapter, we see Naomi's plan to ensure Ruth's survival and security, and God's plan to bless Ruth and bring her into a new family.
As we begin the chapter, we find Naomi and Ruth in Bethlehem, where they have returned after leaving Moab. Naomi is determined to find a way to provide for Ruth and Orpah, her two daughters-in-law, despite their difficult circumstances. She has lost her husband and two sons, leaving her with nothing but a handful of barley meal. In a bold move, Naomi decides to take matters into her own hands and goes to the fields of Boaz, a wealthy relative of her late husband's family.
As Naomi approaches the field, we see that Boaz is a kind and generous man who is respected by the workers in his field. When she greets him, he asks her why she has come to his field at this time. Naomi explains that she is a relative of Elimelech, whose property she has come to claim. Boaz responds by offering her kindness and hospitality, asking her if she is a relative of his late wife's family. Naomi confirms that she is, and Boaz says that he will take care of her and protect her from harm.
But what is remarkable about this chapter is not just Boaz's kindness, but also Ruth's devotion to Naomi. Despite having lost everything, Ruth refuses to leave Naomi's side, even though she could have returned to her own family in Moab. This selflessness is a testament to the deep bond between the two women, who have become like sisters in the midst of adversity.
As we continue to read the chapter, we see that Boaz is not just a kind man, but also a man of faith. He recognizes that he is a part of God's plan for Ruth's life, saying "The Lord be with you, my daughter" (Ruth 2:13). This phrase is more than just a greeting; it is a statement of faith that acknowledges God's presence in their lives.
In the final verses of the chapter, we see that Boaz instructs his workers to leave extra grain for Ruth to gather, as well as extra food for her and Naomi. This act of generosity is not just a kindness on Boaz's part, but also a demonstration of God's provision in their lives. Despite their difficult circumstances, Ruth and Naomi are receiving blessings from God through Boaz.
The book of Ruth is often referred to as the "Gospel according to Ruth," because it foreshadows the coming Messiah and His redemption. In this chapter, we see hints of God's plan for redemption through Boaz, who will eventually become Ruth's husband and the ancestor of King David. We also see the theme of redemption running throughout the chapter, as Ruth finds security and protection in Boaz's field.
As we reflect on this chapter, we are reminded of God's providence in our own lives. Like Ruth and Naomi, we often face difficult circumstances that seem insurmountable. But God is always working behind the scenes to bring us into new relationships and new opportunities. Just as Boaz provided for Ruth in his field, God provides for us in His plan for our lives.
In conclusion, Ruth Chapter 2 is a powerful reminder of God's love and provision for His people. Through Naomi's plan to ensure Ruth's survival and security, we see God's plan unfolding in their lives. As we look back on this chapter, we are reminded of the importance of faithfulness and devotion to one another, as well as the power of God's providence in our lives.
