Nahargarh Fort is among the largest forts in India, located in the range of Aravalli hills. It used to be the city's three point defence system along with the Jaigarh Fort and Amer Fort.

This magnificent fort has a glorious royal part and its stunning architecture makes it one of most attractive tourist destinations in the country. The best thing about this fort is, it offers a scenic view of the whole city from the top of it.

History of Nahargarh Fort

Built by Sawai Jai Singh in 1734. Earlier, it was named Sudarshangarh but, renamed as Nahargarh. There's an anecdote behind the renaming of the fort. Due to an event that occurred during the construction, the deceased prince Nahar Singh Bohmia created difficulty in the construction work. In the honour of Prince, Sawai Ram Singh, built a temple in his name and also renamed the fort, which led to continue the construction work of the fort effortlessly. The fort was expanded during 1868 in the reign of Swai Ram Singh.

Constructed on the top of a till, it was built for the purpose of defence. The walls of the fort are expanded to the Jaigarh fort, safeguarding the whole city. Even after such an intimidating design, it was never attacked. While exploring the fort, the visitors can come across field guns, which were never used instead used to indicate time.

Nahargarh Fort, served as the place of some important historical events which occurred in the fort during the 18th century. It provided refuge to the Europeans, as well as the British Resident’s wife during the Sepoy Mutiny in 1857.

Architecture of Nahargarh Fort

Showcasing the Indo-European style of architecture, the fort has a spectacular gateway which is named as Tadigate.

While entering the fort on the left side you can see the temples built in the honour of mighty rulers of Jaipur. The temples showcase the example of stunning architecture and fine intricate carvings. Inside the premises of the fort there's a temple honouring the Rathore prince, Nahar Singh Bhomia.

The premises of the fort includes a common area or Diwan-i-Aam, which serves as the place where locals gather and meet up with kings to resolve their issues. The fort has two steps well designed in a symmetrical way without transforming the natural mountain land.

One of the popular attractions in the fort is Manvendra Palace. The palace includes ten splendid suites, one for the King Sawai Madho Singh and other nine for his nine queens. The beautifully designed and decorated suites with murals showcases the rich cultural and royal lifestyle of the Rajputs

Nahargarh Fort offers a spectacular look of the city from the top of it making it one of the best travel destinations among the tourists in Jaipur.

In day time the fort offers a dazzling look of the city. In the evening it is one of the best places to enjoy watching the sunset. Both, the daytime and sunset view of the city from it offers a beautiful look.

Entry Fee and Timings

The entry fee for the Indian nationals is Rs 50. And, for the foreign tourists it is Rs 200. There's a discounted price for students. For Indian students the ticket costs around Rs 5 while it costs Rs 25 for foreign students.

The opening time of the fort is 10:am and it closes at 6:00pm. The place is surrounded by thick forest, so it is advised to not stay here after sunset.

Things to know about the Fort

There are two famous stories regarding the renaming of the fort. It is believed that it got the name after the Rathore prince and according to another story, the place used to be the home of a tiger.

Famous bollywood movies like Rang de Basanti, Jodha Akbar and an Oscar-winning Bengali movie were shot on the fort.

When you visit the fort, make sure you carry water bottles, wear cosy cotton clothes which are comfortable.

Wear sunglasses and a hat to save yourself from the sun rays.

Way to reach the Nahargarh Fort

The fort is reached through a 10 km zig-zag road via mounting above the city. Apart from this, there's a stair 800m trail that begins from the hill and to climb up it takes about half an hour.
