Lying Vows

Love isn't always what it seems to be.

Inside the peaceful church, lit by the gentle glow of the candles and the quiet presence of their guests. With a gaze filled with love and deep devotion, he held her hands tightly as he finished his vows with words that binds their heart forever “You will forever be my one and only.” he vowed, as his voice echoed with sincerity.

But after looking back at those moments, realizing that the promises were just words that meant nothing; words that were full of lies. The love they once shared was fading. She looks at the man who once was her husband that had the audacity to come back crawling, asking for forgiveness, begging on his knees, crying, and clinging on to her hand like a dog.

“My love, I’m sorry!” he pleads, but those words merely deepen the wound he had created–they offer no solace.

“So, you admit it?” she asked, her voice trembling. “You admit that it was you who I saw back there?”

“Please…Let me explain.” he begged with desperation in his eyes.

“I don’t wanna hear any of your excuses. I saw what I saw!” she shot back, a mix of wrath and pain filled her words.

“Just let me explain-” he replies as he tries to calm her.

“Explain what? The fact that I saw you on top of that woman?! Aren’t you ashamed of yourself?” Her voice cracked, holding back her tears.

He opened his mouth to respond, but words seemed to fail him. He wanted to apologize, tell her that it was a mistake, but the consequences of his actions were too great to bear.

“Don’t you dare try to justify this,” her voice still trembling “What made you do it? What came into your mind so you can have the audacity to give in?”

“She was clinging onto me! I was trying to hold myself back, I swear!" he tries to explain, his voice filled with desperation.

“You have a wife, You have children!” she exclaims “You wouldn’t have the need to try and hold yourself back! Even if she was clinging onto you, you could’ve pushed her away! you had the choice to walk away but you didn’t, you let it happen!” she continued, barely holding back her tears.

“That was 3 years ago!” he answers back, his voice cracking with frustration “Why can’t you just forgive me? I know that even with all that anger and hatred towards me, there’s still some love left in you.”

She shook her head slowly as her expression darkened. “I wouldn’t dare to forgive you.” her eyes slightly widen as her eyebrows furrow “Even in my ocean of anger and sorrows, there will never be a wave who is willing to change its current for you.”

She leaves their room to grab the divorce papers, “I’m taking the kids with me once we settle this.”

“You can’t do that,” He follows her, "What do you think will happen once they know that we’re like this?” He asks, in hope for her to stay.

“They’re my kids, I gave birth to them.” She answers, “They’re old enough to understand that their father tore this family apart.” she added, wiping her tears off of her face.

“You’re really giving up on me, huh?” he mumbles as he grabs a pen, hesitating to sign the papers.

“I feel like dying when I’m with you, I can’t even bear being on the same roof as you.” She answers, “I only stayed because I didn’t want my children to grow up without a father.”

“Can’t you give me another chance?” He tries to convince her.

The wife stood tall, her arms crossed over her chest. “I already gave you the chance to be the father of my children” she said, her voice filled with finality “I no longer want you as my husband.”

The husband was at a loss for words, his mouth opening and closing in an attempt to find words, but nothing came out. He looked at his wife with a mix of despair and disbelief, his eyes begging for a chance to put things right, but the wife only looked back at him with eyes filled with disgust and disappointment.

The husband took a deep breath and signed the papers. He looked back at his wife again, “You’re really gonna let our love fade?” he asked.

“Of course I will!” she snapped, “Cheating is a choice. You made yours.” she added as she turned away, her shoulders stiff, symbolizing the end of their conversation and the end of their relationship.

The husband stood there in agony and despair as he watched his wife, the love of his life, the woman he had disappointed, walk away; leaving him. His heart ached, knowing that he had destroyed the genuine love that they once had, the pure and unconditional bond that had brought them so much joy and comfort, something so pure, precious and irreplaceable.

The wife who was about to leave her home, looked back at the man who she once called her husband. In that fleeting moment, a wave of memories washed over her–the laughter, the dreams they once shared, and the so-called “unbreakable love” that brought them together. But as she stood there, the heavy feeling of being betrayed had awoken her, reminding her that all those memories are now shadows of what they used to be, the vows that they vowed during their special moment were all bittersweet words that make the love they had even more special. With a heavy heart, she turned away, ready to face what life had in store for her.
