Unbreakable Bonds
Chapter 1 Unexpected I wake up to Jade’s music. Since it’s Saturday morning, I scroll through my TikTok while looking at what assignments need attention. Now that I’m in college, there are moments in which I am horrible at prioritizing what needs to be done. In high school, I would finish an essay a week before its due date, and I loved putting my thoughts on paper. Now, when I get assigned an essay, I procrastinate. It’s amazing how I’ve been able to pass my classes. Jade knocks on my door.

Residing in a Cambrian period
If you were to travel 500 million years into the past, you would find yourself in the Cambrian Period, a time of dangerous seas and alien organisms. However, the Earth would look vastly different compared to how it does now. Instead of the familiar landscapes and continents, you would be standing on a planet covered mostly by shallow seas. In the southern hemisphere, the supercontinent Rodinia is just beginning to break apart, while other land masses like Gondwana, Laurentia, and Baltia are scattered across the planet.

I’ve Always Hated the Water
Note: I wrote this for a particular challenge, but I could not find the right conclusion for it, and it seems to be growing into something much bigger and bolder than I thought it could be. Any critiques or thoughts would be helpful...

Ancient born
Archie has been summoned to council daily for the entire week, to defend his reasons for assigning me a patient after graduating from the healing academy. I graduated a few months ago and still haven’t been able to claim a patient for myself. The natural process was to have the clients approach you and formally ask for your expertise. You could also be assigned a patient by the head of the family you belonged to, or the head of the 1st healing family. But it had been two months since I graduated and no one had asked for my expertise. While my colleagues were getting their request cards filled up, mine remained empty. Archie then took it upon himself to transfer one of his patients to me. It was the 5th prince of the 8th royal family, Prince Luke the third. He had been sick for the past 8 years and had shown no signs of improvement. As an apprentice of Archie, it was within his rights to hand over one of his patients to me, but considering my history, his parents felt I wasn’t qualified to treat their son and accused Archie of trying to kill him.

Ancient born
Today was the first time I would meet my first client as a healer, and absolutely nothing would dampen my excitement. Archie had already briefed me on the prince’s condition and his medications so far, but I needed to examine him myself and come up with my own medications.

Rustle, Oklahoma
Henry Some country song played filling the whole clearing with music. The artist was Josh Turner or something like that, country was never my go to music of choice. I always preferred hard rock and metal since I first listened to Metallica’s Kill ‘Em All album in Josh’s basement when I was thirteen. Josh Turner’s song has everyone moving, drinking, eating, and enjoying the evening so, I guess, I was enjoying it too. A tinge of embarrassment struck me remembering what I told Mary about country music, “I might be from the sticks, but you won’t ever catch me listening or enjoying this on my own.”
