Norddeich beach, May
Leda was sitting on the sand, watching Wolf taking a walk on the shore. When he was far away, she turned her gaze to the sea.
I’m restless, Sea … so many questions… speak to me.
Since you were a child you ran to me. I was the only one to receive your giggles, your tears, your anger, your little secrets, your thoughts.
Then one day, when you were strong enough to swim deep and be away from other people, you did your first and most significant thing for yourself: you took your swimsuit off and you wrapped it around your wrist.
It was your first step to freedom. It was more than a symbolic act, you understood, although you were a child, that you didn’t belong to the world outside of the water, a world represented by your swimsuit.
In my embrace you were rejecting the hostile world of the land, their voices, their injustice, their tortures and you started hearing your own voice, you built yourself. I raised you for years.
But then you kept the swimsuit on. You went on growing, expanding, gaining skills, knowledge, creating your own mindset but the swimsuit remained the same.
So it became tighter and tighter for you, until it was tattooed on your soul suffocating it. But you had forgotten you were wearing it, you were only suffering trying to cope in a world that told you how to live, think and feel.
“Love”, she thought.
You understood by yourself that love is respect and acceptance. Unconditionally.
You know how to love people, animals, and nature.
But you let the swimsuit poison you… it whispers how to use your senses and up to what point, to expect certain behaviours, to move in limited places. It bombards you with norms, rules, power games, codes, beliefs.
Under the threat of guilt, isolation and loneliness it keeps you in chains.
“But unconditional acceptance will not keep me safe”
You are allergic to insect biting, right? Do you lock yourself indoors and shut your windows to avoid them? No. Do you extinguish them? No. You accept their existence, you go into the nature where they live but you always carry an injection with you in case you get stung or bitten.
You are safe.
Same with people… you accept them, you coexist, but you always carry the antidote to their poison: your light.
Acceptance is not agreeing or allowing. It is seeing things as they truly are. It is understanding your place in a greater pattern and going on with your life, seeing its beauty, shining your light on the world.
“my light… the shadows are haunting me…”
Shadows of the past… They say there are two ways you can stop seeing them:
you either switch the light off
or you stand right under the source of light.
But neither works for you. Your light survived through all the darkness, it can’t be switched off, you kept it alive. As for standing… life is not stationary. It flows. You can’t stand under your light, you carry it as you move.
You need to face your shadows. Don’t avoid them anymore. They hold your Truth; it’s because of them, not despite them, that your light shines.
You have to remove the swimsuit, Leda… no, don’t wrap it around your wrist, you won’t be needing it anymore… Let it go.
“Freedom”
Not yet… you conquered all of your fears, except one. The last one. Your first fear. It’s time now, you are ready… you know what you have to do.
Leda took a deep breath and closed her eyes. When she opened them again she was silently diving deep in herself, purposely, courageously.
She reached her core, opened it and looked inside. There was a little girl looking back at her, frightened and crying. “ I’ll save you… listen to me”. Hugging the little girl Leda said to her:
Life’s been given to you, don’t waste it… You have a heart, love it, don’t break it…Find your smile and don’t abandon it, for it’s the energy that keeps you moving on
You’ll meet bad people, throw them out of your life… pull yourself away from their arrows… your endurance is infinite, you’ll see; become an angel on earth’s infern
You’ll find good people, take their hand, lean on the alliance they offer… your strength is unassailable, you’ll see; you can become anything you desire
In the face of hardships never lose heart… pass through the obstacles and never look back… don’t be afraid, dare to break the codes… celebrate intensely all of your days
Become the wind to reach far… Become the time to accomplish everything… You have no limits, draw your route… You are a star, don’t lose your sparkle
Leda was finally free.
She turned her head and saw Wolf returning, still at a distance.
Wolf… her heart whispered, my spirit of guidance and protection all along… Overflowed with gratitude, she rose to her feet and started walking towards him, to meet him half way.
It’s strange really, she thought, all my life I was trying to bring myself home. And I never realised that I am actually my home, always have been.
Wolf smiled at Leda and he opened his arms to the woman with the smile of a happy child and the eyes full of wisdom.
She completed bravely a long journey of discovering herself, healing and transforming into her best version. She has finally landed.
As he closed her in his embrace he already knew what she was going to say:
I am home

Very interesting character names, as both suggest classical mythology and human-animal interaction (Leda and the swan / Romulus and Remus suckled by a wolf). More to the point however are the philosophical considerations in this story, which are written in a beautiful poetic style and convey a very affirming ethos, championing freedom, courage and self-discovery. This was the perfect read to start the year on!
