Chapter 34: The Sleep of Death

We'd found our way into the Marquess's safe house without getting blown up, but I had the unsettling feeling that there was more danger yet to come.

...

With the bomb thrown overboard, it was safe for us to go inside the Marquess's boat.

Irene: The place is clear. I checked. No more traps. Now, what is the Marquess doing in Paris?

June: What do you mean?

Irene: The Marquess wouldn't stay in Paris for the likes of Silvio. She's up to something.

Clue #1

June: My, my. That's an extraordinarily large diamond.

Irene: The Princess Heart. It belongs to the royal family of Belgium.

June: I see you two have already met.

Irene: I've never seen it in person. But in my line of work, well, it's famous.

June: So let's say the Marquess is going after this diamond. Isn't it in Belgium? Why Paris?

Irene: Good question.

Virginia: You said it belonged to the Belgian royal family, right? Look at the paper.

Clue #2

June: "Belgian Royal Family in Paris - Princess Marie was spotted in Paris this week, wearing the famed Princess Heart diamond." It says she's staying at the Elysee Paris Hotel. I know the place. What do you say we set another trap for the Marquess?

Irene: Do you even have to ask?

Virginia: You two be careful. I'm going to go check on Silvio.

...

June: All right. The princess's hotel is across the way.

Irene: Which room is the princess staying in?

Clue #3

June: There. See that window?

Irene: Let me look. Yes, that's the royal suite.

June: And is that the Princess Heart diamond?

Irene: It is, but... security's surprisingly light.

June: Maybe the Marquess had something to do with that. Let's keep watching. Mother. I never got to ask why you chose this life.

Irene: This life. You mean a life of crime? My own parents died when I was young. I suppose it was a matter of survival at first. But soon I was doing it mainly for the thrill, if you can understand that.

June: Yes... I believe I can. Wait, what was that? I thought I saw movement in the hotel room.

Clue #4

June: Yes! It's the Marquess!

Irene: Quickly. We have to intercept her before she gets away.

...

Irene: The Marquess is getting away!

The gap between the hotel and the construction site wasn't more than fifty feet. But it was still too far for us to reach the Marquess in time. I had to act quickly.

Clue #5

I pulled the lever on the crane controls and the steel girder swung into place, making a bridge.

June: Come on, let's go.

The Marquess: Irene. I should have known you wouldn't be far behind.

Irene: Take one more step and I'll kill you.

The Marquess: So, what is it you want, Irene? Revenge?

Irene: You destroyed my family. You tried to shoot my granddaughter. You shot me.

The Marquess: Go ahead then. Kill me. Just as I thought. You don't have it in you. Goodbye, Irene.

As the Marquess leapt from the steel beam, the weight shifted and Irene slipped...

June: Mother!

Clue #6

Irene: Thank you, June.

June: That was too close.

Irene: I'm sorry. I froze. I couldn't...

June: You're not a killer. You don't have to apologize for that. Let's go back to Silvio. We'll find another way to catch the Marquess. I promise.

...

Virginia: What happened? How did the Marquess get away this time?

June: How did you know she got away?

Virginia: Silvio got a new message. Look at the door.

Clue #7

June: "Since you have decided to double-cross me yet again, your debt has now doubled. Deliver the money tomorrow. And remember: I'm watching you."

Silvio: Where did it all go wrong? I was so young. I had so much promise! I suppose it's always the way, isn't it? Those who burn brightest, but out fastest!

Irene: Oh will you please shut up already. Listen, June. We need to get Silvio out of Paris. Away from the Marquess.

June: But how? The Marquess will just track him down again.

Irene: I think I know how to solve that as well.

June: Wait. Did you see that?

Clue #8

June: A flash of light. On the rooftop.

Irene: The Marquess. She's probably watching us right now, through the scope of her rifle.

Virginia: That's... unsettling.

Irene: We should go inside, so she can't see us.

June: Yes, let's. And then you can tell us your bright idea for getting Silvio out of trouble.

...

June: All right, Mother. Spill. How are we going to get Silvio out of trouble?

Irene: With this.

Clue #9

June: Do I even want to know what this is?

Irene: It's poison. Not the kind that will kill him. Just the kind that will stop his pulse.

Silvio: You want me to swallow this? How do I know I can trust you? How do I know you aren't trying to... to snuff me out!

Irene: This is your only chance for getting out of this alive, Silvio. Take the pill.

...

The pill didn't need long to take effect. Silvio was white as ash. I had seen many dead bodies, and you could have fooled me.

Irene: All right. Call and ambulance. We need the Marquess to see this.

Clue #10

I picked up the phone and called for help. When the ambulance came, my mother slipped the medic some cash and explained everything. We did our best to appear distraught as the medic zipped Silvio up in a body bag. After a while we could no longer see the tell-tale glint of the Marquess's weapon. I hoped that mean she'd bought our ruse.
