Chapter 33: Springing the Trap
Amelia had work to do so we parted ways after the newspaper office. Virginia and I took Silvio to the place where we hoped to meet my mother. If she'd seen our message, that is.
June: It's past the time we mentioned in the ad. What if she doesn't show up?
Virginia: There's someone coming this way now. Is that her?

June: Mother, you came. I'm so glad you're here.
Irene: I had just got off the train from Bruges when I saw the paper. Are you all right?
June: I'm fine. It's our friend Silvio. He's in trouble with the Marquess.
Silvio: I tangled with the wrong thief. I took her jewels -- now she threatens to take my life!
Irene: Stealing from the Marquess. Your friend's not so bright, is he?
June: I used the term "friend" loosely.
Virginia: The Marquess is here in Paris and she's demanding Silvio return the jewels.
Irene: Well, she wouldn't leave without getting what she came for.
Silvio: I can't bear it. I can't cross the street without looking over my shoulder!
Irene: Well, if we want to catch the Marquess, we have to be smart about it. And come prepared.

Mother had a 45-caliber pistol in her purse. I felt a shiver run down my spine.
June: Mother, promise me you won't do anything desperate.
Irene: I can't promise that, June. You know who we're dealing with. If push comes to shove, this gun may be the only option I have. Silvio, did the Marquess give you a drop-off point for returning the jewels?
Silvio: Yes. She told me to meet her on the Alexandre Bridge at noon.
...
Silvio: This is where the Marquess ordered me to deliver the jewels. She wanted me to put a ribbon on display to signal my whereabouts.
June: Okay, then let's find something to tie it to.

June: What about the lamppost? This should do the trick.
Silvio: And what am I supposed to say when she shows up? You're throwing me to the lioness!
Irene: Listen to me. You're going to tell her you don't have the jewels. That you need more time. I'll take care of the rest. I'm going to stay out of sight while Silvio meets with the Marquess. Then, I'll follow her. This bridge is too public a place for a confrontation. I need to track her to her hideout.
June: Virginia, you and I should stay out of the way. We can't risk being seen.
Virginia: I don't want to go too far. Can we find somewhere with a view of the bridge?

June: The Eiffel Tower. It has the perfect vantage point.
Irene: Good. You had better get going before she arrives.
June: Mother, wait. Promise me something.
Irene: Yes?
June: Be careful.
...
Virginia: We're too high. We can barely see a thing from up here.
June: You're right. We need to find a way to get a closer look.

June: Aha, this should do nicely. The Marquess could approach from any angle. We need to keep a close lookout.
Virginia: What if the Marquess doesn't show up?
June: Precious jewels are at stake here. She'll want to come and claim them.
Virginia: Aunt June, what's Grandma going to do when she catches up to the Marquess.
The truth was I didn't know. I was scared for Mother. And of what she might do. Her feud with the Marquess was so bitter, I feared it would only end in bloodshed. But before I had the chance to answer, Virginia saw something.
Virginia: Look, someone's walking over to Silvio!

June: It's not the Marquess... it's a man. It looks like she sent someone else to do her bidding. We have to get down there and find out what's going on.
...
We followed the man who showed up at the bridge in place of the Marquess. He led us to a bookstore where he appeared to be the owner.
Bookseller: Why did you follow me back here? Have you lost your mind? If she sees me talking to you, she'll kill me. Or worse!
The fear the Marquess instilled was palpable. I had to find a way to put him at ease.

June: There, I'll draw the curtains. Nobody can see us.
Bookseller: She has eyes everywhere. Nowhere is safe. I can't help you. I just can't. This woman threatened my family. I have two children and I can't put them at risk. You have to understand that.
Irene: Look, I know you're scared. But the only way to stop the Marquess is for you to help us.
June: She's right. If you have any idea where she might be, please, tell us.
Bookseller: Like I said, I can't tell you anything.
The bookseller kept his lips sealed but pushed something towards me with purpose.

June: Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. What does it mean?
Virginia: I remember this book. It's about a boy who floats down the Mississippi River.
June: That's right, on a raft. I wonder...
Irene: The banks of the River Seine. Could that be where the Marquess is hiding?
The bookseller's look confirmed it. We knew where we had to go.
...
Irene: I wouldn't be surprised if the Marquess chose one of these boats as her hideout.
Virginia: But how do we tell which one's hers?
Irene: She's good at blending in... but there's usually something that gives her away.

June: Hmm. Not a patch of rust. This fishing boat looks a lot new than the others.
Irene: There's a good chance it belongs to the Marquess.
June: Yes, but we don't know that. Not for sure.
Irene: This has got to be the Marquess's boat. What are we waiting for?
June: Mother, stop. we don't know that. All we have to go on here is a copy of Huck Finn. Let's at least take another look before we break in.

June: A bottle of fine wine. Not exactly a fisherman's tripple, is it?
Irene: Chateau Margaux... it's the Marquess's favorite. She loves that wine so much she bought the entire vineyard.
June: All right then. So this is the Marquess's boat. Let's see what's inside.
