Chapter 39: The Storm Before the Battle

Twins Mirrored Souls

By Hadia SirajPublished about a year ago 4 min read

The dawn of battle approached like a looming shadow over the kingdom, casting a pall of dread across the land. Seojin awoke to the sounds of clanging metal and the sharp calls of soldiers preparing for war. The sun barely peeked over the horizon, its weak light struggling to pierce the heavy clouds that hung low in the sky, mirroring the turmoil in his heart.

Jaeha stirred beside him, the lines of worry etched on his face even in sleep. He had fought so hard to protect Seojin, yet the more he clung to him, the more the world around them threatened to unravel. Seojin watched his brother, feeling a mix of admiration and fear. Jaeha was a fierce warrior, a dominant presence that commanded respect, but that same intensity was now turned inward, focused solely on him.

“Jaeha,” Seojin whispered, gently shaking his brother awake.

Jaeha’s eyes flickered open, revealing a storm of emotions behind them. “What is it?” he murmured, his voice hoarse from sleep.

“I wanted to talk before the battle,” Seojin said, his heart racing at the weight of his words. “We need to discuss our plan… and what happens if things go wrong.”

Jaeha’s expression hardened, his protective instincts flaring. “Nothing will go wrong. I’ve trained for this, Seojin. We will win.”

“I know you’ve trained, but battles can turn in an instant. I can’t lose you,” Seojin replied, anxiety creeping into his tone. “We need to be prepared for anything.”

Jaeha propped himself up on his elbows, his gaze unwavering as it locked onto Seojin’s. “I can’t promise you that I’ll walk away from this unscathed. But I can promise you that I will do everything in my power to ensure you’re safe.”

Seojin felt a familiar tightness in his chest, the weight of his brother’s fierce devotion suffocating yet comforting. “What if I get captured? Or… or worse?” His voice trembled, the thought of losing Jaeha becoming too much to bear.

“I won’t let that happen,” Jaeha said firmly, his eyes blazing with intensity. “If anyone tries to take you from me, they will pay with their life.”

Seojin couldn’t help but admire Jaeha’s determination. It was part of what made him so captivating—but it also frightened him. The lengths Jaeha would go to for love were extraordinary, yet they bordered on madness.

“Jaeha, I need you to listen to me. I appreciate your strength and your love, but I don’t want you to throw your life away for me. If the situation becomes dire, I need you to think of the kingdom first. You have to be the king they need,” Seojin pleaded, his eyes searching his brother’s.

Jaeha’s expression softened, a flicker of vulnerability breaking through his fierce demeanor. “And what if the kingdom means losing you? What kind of king would I be if I let that happen?”

Seojin inhaled sharply, his heart aching at the implication. He knew that Jaeha saw him as the most precious treasure, a jewel worth more than any kingdom. But he didn’t want to be a burden on his brother’s shoulders. “You are destined to be a great king, Jaeha. You have to fulfill that destiny without being shackled by your love for me.”

For a moment, silence filled the room as Jaeha considered Seojin’s words. The tension between them hung like a thread, delicate and fraying. Finally, Jaeha spoke, his voice low and firm. “You are my destiny, Seojin. No matter what happens today, I will not allow anything to come between us. I will fight for our love as fiercely as I will fight for the kingdom.”

Seojin swallowed hard, grappling with the weight of his brother’s commitment. “Then let’s fight together. Let’s protect each other, not just in battle but in our hearts.”

Jaeha nodded, the fire in his eyes igniting anew. “Together, always.”

As the sun began to rise, casting a golden light across the room, Seojin felt a sense of calm wash over him. They would face whatever came next, not as individuals but as twins, united in their bond. It would be their strength against the world.

But just as he began to find solace in that thought, a sharp knock echoed through the door, jolting them both. “Your Highness!” a voice called from the other side. “It’s time to prepare for the battle!”

Jaeha rose swiftly, his determination shifting back into focus. He turned to Seojin, his expression resolute. “No matter what happens today, remember that you are my heart. If anything should happen, seek shelter. I will find you.”

Seojin nodded, his throat tightening. “Promise me you’ll come back to me.”

“I swear it,” Jaeha declared, his voice firm and unwavering. “Now, let’s get ready.”

As they both donned their armor, the atmosphere shifted from anxiety to a fierce resolve. Seojin felt a rush of adrenaline coursing through him, the weight of the battle ahead igniting a fire in his heart. They would fight, and they would protect each other, no matter the cost.

Stepping outside, the sound of clashing metal and battle cries filled the air, a cacophony of chaos waiting to unfold. Seojin took a deep breath, steeling himself for what lay ahead. The war would not just be a battle for their kingdom; it would also be a battle for their love, for their souls.
