Chapter 35: A Kingdom on Edge

Twins Mirrored Souls

By Hadia SirajPublished about a year ago 4 min read

The morning sun barely pierced through the heavy clouds that hovered over the palace, casting a gloomy shadow across the land. Inside Jaeha’s chambers, the tension was as thick as ever. The kingdom teetered on the edge of chaos, and both brothers knew that the coming days would determine their fate.

Jaeha sat at his desk, surrounded by scrolls and maps, his mind focused entirely on strategy. Seojin watched him from the edge of the room, his heart heavy with a mixture of fear and guilt. He could see the weight of leadership pressing down on Jaeha’s shoulders, the responsibility of the kingdom pulling him deeper into a dark, relentless battle.

“How long do we have?” Seojin asked, his voice soft but filled with concern.

Jaeha didn’t look up from the map as he responded, “Not long. Hojin is moving quickly. If we don’t act soon, he’ll have an army large enough to challenge us.”

Seojin’s stomach twisted at the thought of war breaking out, all because of their forbidden love. He moved closer to Jaeha, standing by his side and looking down at the map. It was filled with markings, strategies for how to defend the kingdom’s borders. But Seojin couldn’t shake the feeling that no matter how strong Jaeha’s forces were, they were fighting a losing battle.

“I never wanted this,” Seojin whispered, his voice filled with regret. “I never wanted you to go to war for me.”

Jaeha’s eyes flicked up to meet Seojin’s, a hard, unyielding determination in his gaze. “This isn’t just for you, Seojin. It’s for us. For everything we’ve built, everything we’ve fought for. I won’t let anyone take that away.”

Seojin sighed, his chest tight with emotions he couldn’t fully express. He wanted to believe that Jaeha could protect them both, that they could somehow survive this storm. But deep down, he knew that their love had put them in an impossible situation, and no amount of strength or strategy could change that.

“I wish there was another way,” Seojin said, his voice breaking slightly. “I wish we could just… run away. Leave all of this behind.”

Jaeha stood abruptly, his chair scraping against the floor as he moved toward Seojin. “Running away won’t solve anything. The kingdom would fall into chaos, and Hojin would hunt us down. No matter where we go, this fight will follow us.”

Seojin looked up at Jaeha, his eyes filled with unshed tears. “I just want to be free, Jaeha. Free from all of this.”

Jaeha’s expression softened, and he reached out to gently cup Seojin’s face. “I know. But freedom doesn’t come without a fight. And I’ll fight for you, Seojin. I’ll fight for our freedom, no matter the cost.”

Seojin closed his eyes, leaning into Jaeha’s touch. For a moment, the world outside seemed to fade away, leaving only the two of them in the quiet of the room. But the peace was fleeting, and Seojin knew that the storm was coming.

There was another knock at the door, breaking the silence. Jaeha’s hand fell away as he straightened, his demeanor shifting back to that of a ruler preparing for battle.

“Enter,” Jaeha called, his voice firm.

The door opened, and Youngmin stepped inside, his face grim. “Your Highness, we’ve received word from the western border. Hojin’s forces are larger than we anticipated. He’s gathered support from several powerful noble families.”

Jaeha’s expression darkened, and he moved back to the map. “How many?”

“At least ten thousand troops, and more are joining him every day,” Youngmin replied, his tone serious.

Seojin’s breath caught in his throat. Ten thousand? The number seemed impossible, overwhelming. How could they hope to stand against such a force?

“We need to act now,” Jaeha said, his voice cold and calculated. “Send word to our allies. We’ll need every man we can muster.”

Youngmin nodded and quickly left to carry out Jaeha’s orders.

As the door closed behind him, Seojin sank onto the edge of the bed, his mind reeling. The reality of the situation was crashing down on him, and he felt helpless in the face of the impending war.

Jaeha came over to him, kneeling in front of him and taking his hands in his own. “We’ll get through this, Seojin. I promise.”

Seojin looked down at their joined hands, feeling the warmth of Jaeha’s touch. But the weight of his brother’s promise only added to the heaviness in his heart.

“Jaeha, if something happens to you…” Seojin’s voice cracked with emotion. “I couldn’t bear it.”

Jaeha shook his head, his grip on Seojin’s hands tightening. “Nothing will happen to me. I’m not going anywhere.”

Seojin swallowed hard, wanting to believe Jaeha’s words but knowing how fragile their situation was. The world around them was collapsing, and no matter how strong Jaeha was, no matter how hard he fought, there were forces beyond their control.

“Promise me you’ll be careful,” Seojin whispered, his voice barely audible.

Jaeha leaned in, pressing his forehead against Seojin’s. “I promise.”

For a moment, they stayed like that, wrapped in the quiet comfort of each other’s presence. But the world outside wouldn’t wait for them, and soon enough, the reality of the coming war would tear them apart.
