Chapter 23: Gathering Shadows
Twins Mirrored Souls

The dawn broke over the kingdom, casting a golden hue across the rooftops of the palace. Seojin stood at the balcony, watching as the first rays of sunlight illuminated the garden below. It was a place where he and Jaeha had shared many moments of peace, but today, it felt different—charged with an unsettling energy.
“Seojin,” Jaeha’s voice broke through his thoughts, pulling him back from the precipice of his worries. He joined Seojin at the balcony, his presence a comforting weight. “You’re quiet this morning.”
Seojin turned to face him, forcing a smile. “Just thinking about what Hojin said. We need to be strategic about our next steps.”
Jaeha’s expression hardened. “Hojin thrives on fear and doubt. We can’t let him manipulate us. We have to show strength, not only to our enemies but to our allies.”
“Right.” Seojin nodded, though uncertainty lingered in his mind. “What’s our plan?”
“I’ve called a meeting with some trusted allies,” Jaeha explained, his gaze intense. “We need to rally support, make our position clear, and demonstrate that our bond doesn’t weaken the throne; it strengthens it.”
Seojin felt a flicker of hope ignite within him. “Who will be there?”
“Lord Chang, Lady Myung, and a few others who have shown their loyalty,” Jaeha replied. “But I want you to play an active role in this, Seojin. You are not just my brother; you are a vital part of this kingdom.”
The warmth in Jaeha’s words bolstered Seojin’s confidence. “I’ll do whatever it takes to protect us,” he vowed.
As the day unfolded, they prepared for the meeting, gathering their thoughts and strategies. Seojin took a deep breath, reminding himself that he was no longer the passive brother but an equal partner in this fight. Together, they would stand against the rising tide of dissent.
When the hour arrived, they entered the council chamber, a grand room adorned with tapestries depicting the kingdom’s history. Seojin’s heart raced as they took their seats at the long, polished table. The tension in the air was palpable, each noble aware of the stakes at hand.
“Thank you all for coming,” Jaeha began, his voice steady. “We face challenges that threaten our kingdom, but together, we can overcome them.”
Lord Chang nodded, his gaze serious. “Your Majesty, the people are restless. Hojin’s words have sparked doubt among the nobility. We need to assure them that the bond you share with Prince Seojin is one of strength, not weakness.”
“Exactly,” Seojin added, feeling the gravity of his position. “We must show them that our relationship can unite the kingdom rather than divide it.”
Lady Myung leaned forward, her brow furrowed. “What do you propose? A public declaration of your bond? An event to showcase your unity?”
“That’s a good idea,” Jaeha replied. “We could host a festival—a celebration of our kingdom’s strength and the ties that bind us. It will demonstrate to our people that love, in all its forms, is a source of power.”
“But how will we address Hojin’s influence?” Lord Chang asked, his voice tinged with concern. “His supporters will not be swayed easily.”
“We must counter his narrative,” Jaeha replied. “We need to highlight the loyalty of those who stand with us. This festival will be our opportunity to showcase our unity, to remind the people of the strength of our lineage and the love that binds us.”
The council murmured in agreement, and Seojin felt a surge of hope. Perhaps this was the path they needed to take—an open display of their bond that would silence the whispers of dissent.
As they discussed the details, Seojin’s thoughts drifted back to Hojin. He couldn’t shake the feeling that the nobleman was watching, waiting for the right moment to strike. Yet, a part of him also felt a strange sense of pity for Hojin, who had once been a friend but had now become a rival.
“Seojin,” Jaeha’s voice snapped him back to the present. “What do you think about the festival?”
Seojin met Jaeha’s gaze, the determination in his brother’s eyes igniting a fire within him. “I think it’s the perfect way to unite our people. It’s time to show them who we are.”
“Good,” Jaeha said, his smile returning. “We’ll need your strength and presence to make this work.”
As the meeting concluded, Seojin felt a sense of purpose swell within him. They were about to embark on a journey that would not only challenge their bond but also solidify it in the eyes of the kingdom. The festival would be their chance to redefine their narrative and reclaim their power.
However, as they stepped out of the council chamber, Seojin caught a glimpse of a shadow lingering at the edge of the corridor. His heart raced, an instinctual warning flaring within him.
“Jaeha,” he whispered, drawing his brother’s attention. “Did you see that?”
Jaeha’s expression turned serious. “What did you see?”
“Someone was watching us. I felt it,” Seojin replied, his voice low.
Jaeha’s gaze hardened, and he moved closer to Seojin, wrapping an arm around his waist protectively. “Stay close. We need to be vigilant.”
As they made their way through the palace, the looming threat of Hojin and the unrest among the nobles pressed heavily on Seojin’s mind. The festival would be a turning point, but they had to ensure their safety first.
The shadows were gathering, and soon, the world outside their bond would come crashing in.
