Chapter 22: Unmasking Alliances
Twins Mirrored Souls

The atmosphere in the grand hall was thick with unspoken tension as the feast progressed. Noble families mingled, laughter echoing off the marble walls, but beneath the surface, the seeds of dissent were beginning to sprout. Seojin felt the weight of every gaze, each one filled with curiosity, judgment, and—he feared—disapproval.
Jaeha remained at Seojin’s side, his presence a constant source of strength. Yet, even as he smiled and engaged with the nobles, Seojin could see the tension tightening around his brother's jaw, the way his fingers curled into fists at his sides. Jaeha was acutely aware of the whispers that flowed through the crowd like a poisonous fog, and he was determined not to let it overwhelm him.
“Let’s mingle a bit,” Jaeha said suddenly, breaking the silence that had settled between them. “We need to gauge the mood of the room.”
Seojin nodded, steeling himself as they made their way through the throng. The moment they approached a cluster of nobles, conversations halted, and all eyes turned to them. Seojin’s stomach churned, but Jaeha held his head high, exuding confidence as he greeted each lord and lady.
“Your Majesty,” one of the older lords, Lord Chang, greeted them with a respectful bow. “It is good to see you and Prince Seojin together. The kingdom needs strong leadership in these uncertain times.”
“Indeed, Lord Chang,” Jaeha replied, his voice steady. “We must unite for the good of our people, especially in light of recent events.”
The lord nodded gravely, his expression serious. “The whispers of dissent are troubling. Many are concerned about the kingdom’s future, and some are even considering aligning with Hojin.”
Seojin felt a chill run through him at the mention of Hojin. “What do you mean?” he asked, trying to mask his anxiety.
“Yoon Hojin has been seen meeting with various noble families,” Lord Chang explained, his brows furrowing. “He promises them a return to tradition, claiming that your bond threatens the stability of the throne. Some are swayed by his rhetoric.”
Jaeha’s expression darkened, his eyes flashing with anger. “He will not tear this kingdom apart with lies,” he vowed, gripping Seojin’s hand tightly under the table. “We will show them our strength.”
As the night wore on, they continued to engage with nobles, but the whispers grew louder. Jaeha listened intently, his posture rigid, every piece of information feeding into his resolve. Seojin, however, felt increasingly uneasy; the situation was precarious, and he worried that their love would be the very thing that brought them down.
Just as the tension began to reach a boiling point, Hojin made his entrance. He glided into the room with an air of confidence, drawing attention like a moth to flame. His presence was magnetic, and the nobles quickly gravitated toward him, eager to hear what he had to say.
“Ah, Jaeha! Seojin!” Hojin called out, a predatory smile gracing his lips. “How delightful to see you both. It seems the festivities are in full swing. But tell me,” he added, glancing around the room, “how can one celebrate when the kingdom is on the brink of chaos?”
Seojin’s heart raced as Hojin’s eyes locked onto his, a smirk playing on his lips. “What do you mean by that?” Jaeha asked, stepping forward, his protective instincts flaring.
“Rumors have a way of spiraling, don’t they?” Hojin replied smoothly, his gaze never leaving Seojin. “Many believe that your relationship is a threat to the kingdom’s harmony. How can the people trust a king whose heart belongs to his brother?”
Jaeha's expression hardened. “I will not let you manipulate the truth, Hojin. Our bond makes us stronger, not weaker.”
Hojin feigned innocence, tilting his head. “Oh, but the people are not so easily convinced. They fear what they do not understand. You should be more concerned about how this perception may impact your reign.”
“Are you suggesting we should hide our bond?” Seojin interjected, his voice rising. “That we should deny who we are for the sake of tradition?”
Hojin chuckled, a dark amusement in his eyes. “Tradition is the foundation of any kingdom, dear Seojin. And if you think the people will accept this—” he gestured between them, “—you’re sorely mistaken.”
Jaeha took a step closer to Hojin, the tension between them palpable. “I will not cower in fear of your lies. This kingdom will know the truth, and I will protect Seojin at all costs.”
Hojin’s expression shifted, the playful façade slipping away. “Then let’s see how that plays out. I’ll be watching closely, dear brother,” he said, before turning on his heel and disappearing into the crowd.
Seojin felt a wave of nausea wash over him. “What do we do now?” he asked, glancing at Jaeha, whose face was a mask of determination.
“We prepare,” Jaeha replied, his voice firm. “We must gather our allies and fortify our position. We cannot let Hojin’s words sow discord among the people.”
Seojin nodded, the weight of the situation pressing heavily on his shoulders. “But what if he succeeds? What if the people turn against us?”
Jaeha’s gaze softened, and he took Seojin’s hands in his. “I won’t let that happen. We will fight for our love and for our kingdom. Together, we will show them that we are stronger than they think.”
As the feast continued around them, Seojin felt a flicker of hope ignite within him. No matter what challenges lay ahead, he knew they would face them side by side. The storm was coming, but they would not be swept away. Together, they would stand firm, united in their bond.
