Chapter 15: Whispers of Dissent

Twins Mirrored Souls

By Hadia SirajPublished about a year ago 4 min read

The days following Seojin's heart-to-heart with Jaeha felt like walking through a minefield. Though a fragile understanding had blossomed between them, the tension lingered, heavier than the warm summer air that enveloped the palace. Seojin couldn’t shake the feeling that the tenuous peace they had carved out was on the brink of collapse, especially with the whispers of dissent growing louder among the nobles.

As Seojin settled into a new routine, spending more time with Hana and less in the oppressive solitude of the palace, he couldn’t help but notice the subtle shifts in Jaeha’s demeanor. The king-in-waiting had always been a force of nature, but now there was a weariness in his eyes, a tension in his muscles that suggested a battle waging inside him.

One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple, Seojin met Hana in the secluded alcove of the gardens. The scent of blooming flowers filled the air, offering a momentary escape from the turmoil that lay beyond the palace walls.

“Hana,” Seojin began, taking a seat on the cool grass, “I’m worried about Jaeha. He seems… different lately.”

Hana looked at him, concern etched on her face. “What do you mean?”

“He’s still protective, but there’s something darker lurking behind his eyes. I can feel it,” Seojin confessed, running a hand through his hair in frustration. “I think he knows that the nobles are plotting against him. It’s weighing heavily on him.”

Hana’s expression darkened, and she leaned closer, lowering her voice. “I’ve heard the same. They’re growing restless, Seojin. They see Jaeha’s obsession with you as a weakness—a crack in his armor that they can exploit. Some want him dethroned, and they’re not afraid to act.”

Seojin felt a chill run down his spine. “But what can we do? If they plot against him, they’ll come for me too. I can’t let anything happen to Jaeha. He’s my brother!”

“I know,” Hana said, her voice gentle yet firm. “But you also have to think strategically. If you can’t change how Jaeha feels, maybe you can help him understand how to deal with the nobles. He needs to appear strong and in control.”

Seojin nodded, resolve hardening in his heart. “You’re right. I’ll talk to him again. Maybe if we can show the nobles that we stand united, they’ll think twice about any rebellion.”

As they strategized, Seojin felt a flicker of hope. Perhaps together, he and Jaeha could navigate the treacherous waters that lay ahead. However, the sense of urgency pressed upon him, and he knew that time was of the essence.

The following day, Seojin sought out Jaeha, determined to convey his concerns. He found his brother in the training grounds, surrounded by guards as he practiced his swordsmanship. The rhythmic sound of steel clashing against steel echoed in the air, each strike resonating with the weight of their shared destiny.

“Jaeha!” Seojin called out, trying to catch his brother’s attention as he approached.

Jaeha paused mid-swing, turning to face Seojin, his expression shifting from focused intensity to surprise. “What is it, Seojin? Can’t you see I’m busy?”

“I know, but we need to talk. It’s important,” Seojin insisted, stepping closer.

Jaeha sighed, frustration evident in his voice. “Can it wait? I need to train. I need to be ready for whatever comes.”

“It can’t wait!” Seojin exclaimed, the urgency spilling over. “The nobles are restless. They’re plotting against you, and if you don’t show them strength, they might take drastic measures.”

Jaeha’s expression hardened, the steel of his gaze matching the sword he wielded. “I’m not afraid of them. They underestimate me. They think my focus on you makes me weak.”

“Jaeha, this isn’t just about you! This is about us. They will come for me if they think they can use me to weaken you,” Seojin argued, desperation rising in his voice.

For a moment, silence hung between them, the tension palpable as Jaeha processed Seojin’s words. “What do you want me to do?” he asked finally, his tone softer but still edged with frustration.

“Let me help you. We need to show them that we stand united,” Seojin replied, determination burning in his chest. “If they see us working together, they might think twice about challenging you.”

Jaeha lowered his sword, a flicker of uncertainty crossing his face. “You really think that will work?”

“I believe in us, Jaeha. I believe in our bond. But we have to act quickly before it’s too late,” Seojin urged, his heart racing at the thought of what might come.

Jaeha ran a hand through his hair, conflicted. “Fine. But if they try to manipulate you, I will not hesitate to protect you, no matter the cost.”

Seojin stepped forward, placing a hand on Jaeha’s arm. “I appreciate that, but I need you to trust me too. I’m not a child who needs protecting; I’m your brother who wants to stand by your side.”

“Alright,” Jaeha conceded, the tension in his shoulders easing slightly. “We will face this together. But if things get out of hand, I won’t let you take the fall.”

Seojin nodded, relief flooding through him. “Let’s start planning. We’ll show them that we’re stronger together.”

As they strategized, a sense of purpose ignited within Seojin. Together, they would face the storm brewing on the horizon, and perhaps, in doing so, they could fortify their bond against the challenges ahead.

Yet, even as they prepared, Seojin could sense the shadows lengthening around them, whispers of dissent echoing through the halls of the palace. The storm was coming, and with it, a reckoning that would test the very fabric of their relationship.
