Smells of saffron wafted from Lisa’s kitchen. Her chef, Anisa Boseman, cooked marsala with turkey as the base protein. Lisa strolled through her spacious place, her eyes closed as she sniffed the air.
Broccoli and brown rice rounded out the meal. “Thank you, ‘Nis,” she acknowledged.
“My pleasure,” the chef replied and cleaned up the remainder of the preparation area.
“I’ll see you tomorrow,” Anisa spoke in a sing-songy tone. Then, the house became almost completely empty. Lisa just scrolled on her phone for dates. Her phone then vibrated with a match on the app. It was like a jolt of electricity coursing through her frame.
She reviewed the profile of the suitor. Holmes Cavanaugh held an MBA from New Sweden University. He was six foot four inches and had a clean cut beard and brown skin. He started his own business in Newark, Delaware. He created an entrepreneurial system within a think tank that helped to develop other businesses. Lisa was smitten.
He struck first. “Hello?”
“Hi.”
“I noticed you live in Wilmington. Are you interested in buying gold from Small Wonder Exchanges?”
It was a damn advertisement. Lisa began scraping the remnants of her meal into the trash. She sighed. With her money, she put more cash into the dating site. This permitted her virtual one-on-one sessions with possible dates.
She understood the parameters of the site. What she enjoyed most remained the idea that she could find someone and be happy. Or, she could just have fun. She put down a thousand dollars and upgraded her profile to the highest level.
Her tenacity and drive pushed her to experience the grandeur of passion and romance. In her mind, she could one day become a wife and raise children like Loreen. With the money, she sought something new.

I like how this chapter blends everyday details with Lisa’s big hopes and frustrations. The ending really captured her determination—it makes me curious to see where her story goes next.
