Businesswoman Chapter 192
Postage
Envelopes opened. Loreen tore through them and pushed her palm to her forehead. She looked at the various “green” companies that lodged complaints against her.
“Snail mail?” she thought. This could have all been discussed in a video conference. She observed the idea of how they wanted to reduce paper but still used it anyway. A yawn came to her outstretched mouth.
The first correspondence outlined how a business she saved had polluted the Brandywine River. She used her context clues to negotiate through the letter. Like an excavator, she dug deep into the text that wasn’t deep at all. She passed it to the side.
As she lifted another letter, a dead centipede fell from the paper. She didn’t show fear or apprehension. What she did next showed her resolve. She simply slid the deceased arthropod back into the envelope and proceeded to read it.
In essence, it blamed her and the company she championed for depleting the number of multi-legged animals around the site where the factory issued exhaust. Loreen knew how the corporation had followed every guideline and hurdled over every regulation to expel their runoff.
She sighed. Another piece of mail she opened showed blood stains. This was due to her stance on abortion. With her support of women to choose life, their own, she was hounded and lambasted. This little letter meant that she could better reserve her anger for the state of the country who still voted for anti-abortionism.
If she had become even more enraged at the contents, not the content of the last two letters, it did not show. She displayed no animus towards the fact that intimidation had been used as a tactic. With a few keystrokes, she sent the addresses to the federal authorities and didn’t even open the rest.

Loreen’s calm defiance in the face of hypocrisy and intimidation is striking. This chapter subtly exposes the contradictions of activism and the quiet strength of resilience.
