Lisa Conway went to church. She didn’t know if it was some icy memory from years past that pushed her. She had remained secular in every way in her businesses and other dealings. She wondered if it was out of some duty to deities beyond the grasp of reality.

What made it clearer for her stood the idea that people of faith always refrain “it happened for a reason.” She always held that every human action ought to happen because of reason. The little plastic containers of the wafers and grape juice passed around. She hesitated. Then her hand stretched out to receive the Communion on First Sunday. Lisa ran to the ladies room.

As she clutched the elements, the mirror reflected her comely visage. With the strength of her hands, she cracked the wafer into tiny pieces into the sink like grains of sand. The red liquid gushed from her cup not like blood but like thoughts and emotions she had experienced for over twenty years.

Her chin remained lifted high. She disposed of the plastic pieces and walked out of the restroom into the day. It took her a few minutes in her car to recover from what she just did. Sensations of liberation pervaded her consciousness. Like a butterfly learning to fly, she felt awkward and empowered at the same time.

Those moments from her life where her parents brought her to services, the many too many times that the clergyperson called for her soul to be saved. Now, she felt like she saved herself from the hold of mysticism. By shrugging off this yoke, all Lisa wanted to do was to go to her desk. At once a battlefield and a refuge, her work would be her saving grace. She depressed the accelerator pedal and exited.
