The disappearing trick that the c-suite performed for Atkinson proved to be rather ambitious. He could tolerate most things, but being prompt and having everyone on the same page remained a sticking point for the businessman. He walked into another room.
“Surprise!”
Atkinson kept a straight face for a long time. He looked about the other visages and their smiles soured.
“Let’s make sure we’re on time and professional. This is business, my business. We must keep it about this money and time. I don’t waste either one for anyone.” Somehow, he said this warmly. He didn’t chide so much as remind them pleasantly.
“We’re sorry, Entrepreneur Paul. We just wanted to do something spontaneous and original,” Bellisima Powell ventured.
“That’s understood, now. From this point on, let us keep this all about getting to the agenda and having fun, because making money is joyful.”
The room let out a collective sigh. Atkinson looked at everyone. He motioned for them to have a seat around the large oak desk.
“Do we have any new business?” Atkinson asked.
“Aren’t we going to say a prayer first?” Calley McBride queried.
“No, we are not. We are conducting business and there’s no room for the unknown and unknowable to interfere with our affairs,” Atkinson shot back at her.
“If we can just––” he started.
“At least let us pray together outside of this room…?”
“Do what you must, but it’s all about the dollar sign, not the cross for me. I say that not in substitution but overall preference. So, go. You have three minutes.” The room uprooted from their chairs and retired to an anteroom in the office space. Atkinson clasped his hands together and sighed. As an atheist, he could only go over notes while acknowledging the faith of his co-executives.
