She screamed. The scene was unfolding, just like every nightmare and she was powerless. Digging her toes into the ground she lunged forward against the hands wrapped around her arms. They broke, or maybe they let go because they knew she was too late. Too late to save him. He broke the clearing and she screamed again. Running as fast as fairy wings could carry her. Jared locked eyes with her and he could see her pleading, “please god no.” But he was steel resolve, all cold, all calculating. They collided as thunder cracked, his arms wrapping around her. Hot lead seared into her side, into her shoulder, crack, crack, crack again. The bullets burnt lines through the air. Her body collapsed. She could feel warm blood spreading down her back. He growled, defiantly gently laying her to the side. He reached his will out toward the thunder and ripped metal and tore flesh. The smell of blood filled him as he reached to the left side. Bullets thundered from the surrounding troops, she watched them hit, hit, hit, hit, 4 maybe 5. He went down on one knee but his will remained unbroken. Soldiers screamed as their weaponry broke, and shrapnel tore flesh and shattered bone. But there were too many. Already the ranks reformed in front of them, the wounded and dying stepped on by the second group. They leveled off weaponry and fired. Jared ripped the right column of men apart, but his body jerked. Even his advanced healing rate could only cover so much damage. Blood was soaking through his shirt.

She crawled to him, but her vision was narrowing. Her magic would end this, but it couldn’t save him. She pulled herself to her knees, wrapping her arms around his body. His blood was hot and sticky, pooling around her hands. She reached into the earth, and it rent. The battle heat left him as the bullets stopped. Tangled branches shot up through the ground spearing the soldiers, they bled and died. The silence fell, heavy and unnatural. Crimson, thick rivulets crawled to her as she trembled. Unable to hold him up any longer she laid him forward. He rolled onto his back and found her eyes. “No, Maus, why?”

She sobbed, “because I love you.” The crimson had reached her body, and the blood of the soldiers started to wrap itself around her ankles. She frantically felt his body, trying to staunch the bleeding from the bullet holes that his body couldn’t seem to heal. He coughed, red blood splattering across her cheek as she leaned over him. It was all for naught now. She pressed her lips against him, tears streaming down her face. “Please don’t leave me,” she sobbed. “PLEASE.” The crimson wrapping up around her thighs, she knelt in a pool of blood now.

“I didn’t want this for you,” his breath was a whisper. She felt the blood wrapping around her waist, it was uncomfortably hot now, leaving blistered red skin in small patches.

“Without you, I don’t want to be.” Her voice was a growl against the pain.

“I love you, and I will be with you- always.” He reached a shaky hand to her cheek, pulling her back into his lips. He kissed her, and breathed, letting go of his form. She felt him come into her, as the blood burned up her back and across her breast. The path was locked now. What they were was an unholy union, they fought for so long against it. But here at the end, she knew it was the only way. She could feel him nestled in her chest, pulsing against the blood that now incinerated her essences. She pulled away from his cold body, lifeless. Her hair cascaded like flames down her back. Fire spread down her wings as she stood. Her skin was glossy, shifting, blood and her eyes were completely black. Physically healed, she flexed her hands- filling her nostrils with the smell of blood she strolled out of the grove. And where they went, the world would burn.
