That night was heavy; as many eyes as there are in the world, they remain thirsty to peer into the sorrow and pain of others' lives, as if another's suffering is the most ruthless form of entertainment.
As the cold seeped into the house, Lucy's mother quietly served baked beans on toast, the thick layer of sauce spreading over the bread, just as grief silently seeped into her heart. Kezia helped prepare their dinner, just as she always did whenever she visited Lucy’s home.
Then everyone ate together. Perhaps there wasn’t enough food in that house to satisfy so many hungry mouths, but even a single morsel, when offered with love, could quench that hunger. Tonight, Kezia did not eat her favorite recipe, the one her father had made, and she felt no regret. Perhaps, tonight, she had the most delicious meal of her life.
After dinner, Kezia and her father left for home. Kezia hugged Lucy, but this time, a cold silence swallowed their words.
As soon as they stepped out, Kezia looked at her father in amazement and said, "You are great, Dad!"
Her father responded with a simple smile.
For Kezia, this night was unforgettable. Such moments took her mind away from thoughts of her mother, at least for a little while. But whenever she felt loneliness settle deep within her soul, it was only her mother she longed for.
Because of what had happened that night, sleep evaded her. She got up, pulled back the curtains, and sat by the window. It was a full moon night. The sky, wrapped in a silver blanket of moonlight, sparkled with stars. The cool, gentle breeze made the night even more beautiful. Gazing at the sky, she whispered, "Hey Mommy, are you there?" and then, she laughed.
Just then, she heard a voice from the sky: "Dear, you should go to sleep now. It’s quite late."
Kezia was startled. Her head lightly bumped against the window, bringing her back to reality. Disheartened, she lay back down on her bed.
The coming morning would begin with a new chapter of life, but for Kezia, time was repeating itself, Her story remained unfinished.

Oooo, time was repeating itself for Kezia? I wonder what's gonna happen next
Hi Sk, I really loved the words in the first paragraph, they are so true. "...as many eyes as there are in the world, they remain thirsty to peer into the sorrow and pain of others' lives, as if another's suffering is the most ruthless form of entertainment" I also love baked beans on toast. It is a simple meal, but one of my favorites.
getting better
These short stories are great, and one can learn a lot from them when searches their heart. Good job.
This is a really vivid depiction of the human condition. We are drawn in, and hope for the best for Kezla!
This one is so well written, you said everything that needed to be in few words. I agree Maryam, first paragraph is wonderful, as is her silent words to her mother
1st paragraph makes it hard to gulp because of the bitter truth. I'm eager to read the next part. I wonder what would happen the next morning, what is that new chapter. Good job with the consistency and dedication 👏
