The traditional dress of the Pashtoon people
traditional dress

The traditional dress of the Pashtoon people, primarily from the regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, and Afghanistan, reflects their cultural heritage and is both practical and modest.
For men, the most common outfit is the shalwar kameez, a long tunic paired with loose trousers. Pashtoon men often pair this with a waskat (waistcoat), and in colder regions, they wear a woolen pakol (Chitrali cap) or Peshawari cap. Footwear, known as Peshawari chappal, is a sturdy leather sandal, ideal for the mountainous terrain. During colder months, men wrap themselves in a large shawl or patkai for warmth and versatility.
Women in Pashtoon culture also wear a shalwar kameez, but with brighter colors and intricate embroidery. A large chador or dupatta is worn to cover the head and shoulders, reflecting modesty, which is a central aspect of Pashtoon cultural values. In some regions, women may also wear a burqa or abaya for additional coverage in public.
The Pashtoon dress is deeply rooted in their identity, balancing traditional values with the practicality needed for life in both rural and urban settings. It is a symbol of pride, culture, and regional identity.
