The School For Good Mothers by Jessamine Cahn a book review

If you read nothing else from this review please read this: (include clap back) I cannot recommend this book enough.

When I picked this book up I had no idea what it was about. I went into it blindly...

I know...

However, I am so glad that I went into this blindly because I am so thoroughly surprised by this book and it has become one of my Roman Empires.

Now, enough of this, let's talk The School for Good Mothers by Jessamine Chan...

Is School for Good Mothers worth the read?

This book gripped me from the very start. It's also the first book that physically made me want to throw it against the wall. Although, I had my Kindle and of course, I would never throw a book...

Is School for Good Mothers worth reading? Well, in short, yes. It is worth reading and you might have a lot of strong feelings about it. Don't worry the strong feelings are completely normal and the result of very good storytelling.

This book will have you thinking about how much is too much when it comes to parenting. It will also get you wrestling with the characters' decisions and mistakes maybe even often finding yourself overlooking some of them once you get to know them.

One of my favourite aspects of this novel was the character development. The MC not only goes through intensive growth but the women around her do as well and it is done in such a way that almost personally connects the reader.

What is School for Good Mothers by Jessamine Chan about?

This story follows a mother on a very bad day.

This mother's very bad day turns terrible when she is institutionalized so that she can pay the time for her mistake. This is where the story takes a dystopian turn. The narrative is so natural and not over the top that you feel like you are reading normal contemporary fiction until - BAM - you are grabbed into a world of a shady government's solution to fixing bad parenting.

Along the way you meet other mothers in this school and their stories that got them there. The emotions run deep in this story so it is not for the "happy ending" readers.

The novel explores and challenges what it means to be a good mother. What it takes emotionally and physically and what it looks like when mothers are scrutinized by society and the culture around them.

What Would you rate School for Good Mothers out of 5 stars?

This was a 5/5 stars

A note on how I rate books...

*If you have been in the online reading/book community for a while you often hear people say something like "I rarely give five stars..." Whether it's our pretentiousness on the matter I have no idea...

Regardless...as someone who enjoys paying attention to things like literary devices, themes, character development and so on I hardly rate books based off vibes or how good I think I am as a writer/reader.

I feel that it is important to give credit to where credit is due.

Wows, what a recommendation! Now I'm stuck between curiosity and trepidation cuz I'm a "closet happy ender" but as a Mom it's completely relatable content I'm sure. Thanks for your writing about this!
