The Light of Patience
The Quranic Story of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) – Peace Be Upon Him

The Holy Quran contains many stories that guide humanity toward truth, patience, and faith in Allah. Among them, the story of Prophet Yusuf (A.S.), mentioned in Surah Yusuf, is one of the most beautiful and meaningful. Allah Himself calls it “Ahsan-ul-Qasas”, meaning the best of stories. This story teaches us powerful lessons about patience, forgiveness, honesty, and complete trust in Allah during hardship.
Prophet Yusuf (A.S.) was the beloved son of Prophet Yaqub (Jacob) (A.S.). From a young age, Yusuf (A.S.) showed signs of wisdom, good character, and purity of heart. His father loved him deeply, not out of favoritism, but because Yusuf (A.S.) had a special spiritual nature and future mission from Allah.
One night, Yusuf (A.S.) saw a remarkable dream. He dreamed that eleven stars, the sun, and the moon were bowing down to him. When he shared this dream with his father, Prophet Yaqub (A.S.) immediately understood that this dream carried a divine message. He advised Yusuf (A.S.) not to tell the dream to his brothers, fearing that jealousy might arise in their hearts.
Unfortunately, Yusuf’s brothers were already jealous. They believed their father loved Yusuf more than them. This jealousy slowly turned into hatred and led them to commit a terrible act. They planned to remove Yusuf (A.S.) from their lives. One day, they took him with them outside the city under the excuse of playing. There, they threw him into a deep well and returned home pretending to be sad. They showed their father Yusuf’s shirt stained with false blood and claimed that a wolf had eaten him.
Prophet Yaqub (A.S.) was heartbroken, yet he did not lose faith in Allah. He practiced “beautiful patience” (Sabr-e-Jameel) and said that Allah was the One whose help he would seek. Though the pain remained in his heart, his trust in Allah never weakened.
Meanwhile, Allah had not abandoned Yusuf (A.S.). A traveling caravan passed by the well, found him, and rescued him. However, instead of returning him home, they sold him as a slave in Egypt. Yusuf (A.S.) was bought by a high-ranking official, known as the Aziz of Egypt, who treated him well and allowed him to grow in dignity.
As Yusuf (A.S.) grew into a young man, Allah blessed him with exceptional beauty, wisdom, and noble character. However, this blessing became a test. The wife of the Aziz tried to seduce him and invited him toward sin. Yusuf (A.S.), fearing Allah, firmly refused and chose righteousness over desire. To protect her reputation, she falsely accused Yusuf (A.S.) of wrongdoing.
Despite being innocent, Yusuf (A.S.) was sent to prison. Even there, he remained patient and faithful. He never complained about his fate. Instead, he used his time to worship Allah and guide others. His honesty and wisdom impressed the prisoners, especially when he correctly interpreted their dreams.
Years later, the king of Egypt saw a strange dream involving seven fat cows eaten by seven thin cows, and seven green ears of corn and seven dry ones. None of the advisors could explain it. At that moment, one former prisoner remembered Yusuf (A.S.) and told the king about him.
Yusuf (A.S.) interpreted the dream with clarity. He explained that Egypt would experience seven years of prosperity, followed by seven years of severe famine, and then a year of relief. He also suggested a wise economic plan to save food during the years of abundance. The king was amazed by Yusuf’s wisdom and honesty.
Before leaving prison, Yusuf (A.S.) requested that his innocence be publicly proven. When the truth came out, it was clear that he had been falsely accused. The king honored him and appointed him as the guardian of the treasures of Egypt. The boy once thrown into a well, sold as a slave, and imprisoned unjustly, now stood as a powerful leader—all by the will of Allah.
During the famine, people from surrounding lands came to Egypt for food. Among them were Yusuf’s brothers. They did not recognize him, but Yusuf (A.S.) recognized them immediately. Instead of seeking revenge, he treated them with kindness. Eventually, he revealed his identity. His brothers were overwhelmed with shame and fear.
Yusuf (A.S.) forgave them completely and said noble words that reflect the highest moral character:
“No blame will there be upon you today. May Allah forgive you.”
This act of forgiveness shows the greatness of his heart and the strength of his faith.
Later, Prophet Yaqub (A.S.) and the entire family came to Egypt. When they reunited, Yusuf’s childhood dream came true. His parents and brothers honored him, fulfilling Allah’s promise. The long journey of pain, patience, and trust ended in success and mercy.
