The Accidental Poet: A Poetry Collection: A Review

A title with too many colons

By Matthew J. FrommPublished about a year ago Updated about a year ago 2 min read

I sat quietly and sipped my sweet tea

As I watched the sunset slowly over sea

Thoughts of tomorrow

Of joy and of sorrow

thinking what could, yet should not be

Ah Paul…

Don’t think I was going to forget about you–we could never forget about you. You’d also never allow it.

I enjoyed this collection. I’m sure if I asked Paul if he had a theme when he compiled this, he’d scoff at the high minded thought, some comments about us American’s looking for meaning in too many mundane things would likely follow, and eventually we’d make a Lord of the Rings reference. Life would go on.

Maybe if I pressed, Paul would concede that it’s all accidental; he’s the accidental poet after all.

And maybe I’d agree. Then I’d sit at my desk and wonder on the nature of things, namely how important themes really were.

Back to it…

The Accidental Poet’s “slice of life” nature creates an enjoyable reading experience. It bypasses stuffiness and gets right to the heart of everyday life. Happiness, sadness, freedom, addiction…all are touched on in a way that forges connection to the source and breeds relatability.

As the title implies, this collection is a great read for poets and non-poets (and of course accidental poets) alike. It’s a reminder that the full life includes not only dancing at balls, but also upon the tavern tables.

The reverie of life’s fullness, the good and bad, is on full display.

Be brave

Be bold

Be open

Be

Free

Maybe The Accidental Poet had the most important theme after all…

On critic scale of 0-100, where 70 means it’s a “recommendation to fans of the author or genre,” I gave it a 71/100, and a 5/5 on Amazon. You can purchase Paul’s work here:

I'm I the only person who hasn't bought Paul's book? He's had at least 5 reviews written about it on here. Amazing! Guess It's time to join the bandwagon.

Oh, this was a very joyful thing to read, and I thought about different ways to respond quite a few hundred times. Then thought, screw that. First and foremost, thank you for buying the book. It's an investment I don't take lightly, because the content can be found on Vocal, so your support is appreciated. Also, thank you for writing a review. Even, if it had been a negative review, I'd have genuinely been happy, because it's a learning experience. Of course, I am glad that it scored so highly. I know how seriously you take reviewing books, because I've read some of yours in the past, so was a little nervous, in a good way. So 71 out of a 100 is a big massive win in my book. I love the quotes you highlighted and the way you get me lol. "Ah Paul… Don’t think I was going to forget about you–we could never forget about you. You’d also never allow it." made me grin because I've probably said to you in the past, and know I have to Heather, Stephen and Donna about how I have the need to be liked, but also don't care, but do care. So it's a constant tussle lol! So, yeah, I can't argue with that estimation and yes, totally agree with the point of the theme. There is no theme and yes, it would descend into LOTR quotes. Which reminds me I think I need a pair of yellow boots and a bright blue jacket. So, yes, thank you. Thank you a whole lot. I am so glad you enjoyed it. The next book, though, will have an overarching theme. I think this one was always just going to be a mishmash, and I'm still happy with it and glad most people have enjoyed it that way. I am rambling now and feeling all touched and smiley. So I'll say thank you. Hey dol! merry dol! ring a dong dillo!

  • I'm a little sad for the 71/100 but happy for the 5 stars on Amazon hehehe

"thinking what could, yet should not be" Only now realizing well after my own read-through and review that this could be a hidden Metallica reference. And, man, if it was, Paul becomes my favorite poet for all of eternity.
