A tragic love story.

In the beautiful city of Verona, Italy, two powerful families, the Montagues and the Capulets, are locked in a bitter and violent feud. Their hatred for each other runs so deep that even their servants fight in the streets. The Prince of Verona declares that anyone who disturbs the peace again will be sentenced to death.

Romeo, the only son of Lord Montague, is heartbroken over a girl named Rosaline, who does not love him back. His cousin Benvolio tries to cheer him up and suggests he look at other women. They hear that the Capulets are hosting a grand party, and Benvolio convinces Romeo to sneak in, hoping he’ll find someone new to love.

At the party, Romeo sees Juliet, the daughter of Lord Capulet. Instantly, they fall in love, not knowing they are from enemy families. When they find out, they are heartbroken, but their love is stronger than the hatred around them.

The next day, Romeo goes to Friar Laurence, a kind priest, and asks him to marry them in secret. The Friar agrees, hoping the marriage might bring peace between the two families. That afternoon, with only Juliet’s Nurse and the Friar as witnesses, Romeo and Juliet are secretly married.

Later that day, Romeo’s friend Mercutio gets into a fight with Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin. Tybalt is angry that Romeo came to the Capulet party. Romeo tries to stop the fight, but Tybalt kills Mercutio. In a rage, Romeo kills Tybalt. The Prince of Verona arrives and decides not to execute Romeo but banishes him from Verona instead.

Juliet is devastated. She learns that Romeo killed her cousin but also that he is now her husband. She decides to stay loyal to Romeo. That night, Romeo sneaks into Juliet’s room, and they spend their first and last night together as husband and wife before he leaves for exile in Mantua.

Meanwhile, Juliet’s parents, unaware of her secret marriage, arrange for her to marry a nobleman named Paris. Juliet refuses, which enrages her father. Desperate, she runs to Friar Laurence for help. The Friar gives her a potion that will make her appear dead for 42 hours. His plan is to send a message to Romeo to come and rescue her when she wakes, so they can escape together.

Juliet takes the potion and is found “dead” the next morning. Her family is heartbroken and lays her in the family tomb. But the message never reaches Romeo. Instead, he hears from a friend that Juliet is dead. Devastated, Romeo buys poison and rides to Juliet’s tomb in Verona.

At the tomb, Romeo finds Paris, who has come to mourn Juliet. They fight, and Romeo kills Paris. Believing Juliet is truly dead, Romeo drinks the poison and dies beside her. Moments later, Juliet awakens and sees Romeo’s body. In grief, she takes his dagger and kills herself.

The Montagues and Capulets arrive at the tomb. Friar Laurence explains everything. Filled with guilt and sorrow, both families agree to end their feud. To honor Romeo and Juliet, they promise to build statues of the two lovers, side by side, as a reminder of what their hatred has caused.
