None of This Is True Review
Authored by Lisa Jewell (Review by Malcolm Clarke)

Introduction
"None of This Is True" is another thrilling and inscrutable book from the queen of psychological suspense, Lisa Jewell. Jewell's novel is a perfect encapsulation of what fans of the anguished tale want to read in the genre. Her book has an astonishing and, at times, ridiculous plot, populated with absurd yet rounded characters who are far from likable. It even abandons the rule of gravity in the over-rolled snowball-like climax of the book and ends with a clever twist.
The novel "None of This Is True" tells the stories of two women, Alix and Josie, both of whom experience dramatic changes. Alix works as a podcaster and is constantly searching for fascinating stories. One day, she crosses paths with Josie, who seems rather ordinary. But Alix soon learns that appearances can be deceiving: Josie is not who she appears to be.
At first, Alix likes Josie because of her podcast. She's fascinated by Josie's secretive nature and the seemingly endless well of stories she can tap into. But as Alix gets closer to Josie, she starts to realise that there are things Josie isn't telling her. And when Josie's obsession with a hidden part of her past begins to consume her, Alix finds herself in danger. What sounded like an exciting collaboration for Alix and Josie, set against the backdrop of a small Texas town, is turning into something much more sinister.

The Arc of the Characters
Jewell truly shines in her ability to craft multi-dimensional characters that are both relatable and unsettling. Alix comes across as a driven and ambitious woman, yet her curiosity and craving for validation leave her vulnerable to Josie's manipulative tendencies. Watching her transition from a confident podcaster to someone who begins to question her judgment is compelling .
Josie, on the other hand, is a masterclass in character complexity. Initially, she seems like a benign, albeit peculiar, individual. However, as her story unfolds, we see the layers of her personality which reveal a deeply troubled and manipulative person. Jewell brilliantly captures Josie's descent into darkness, making her both sympathetic and terrifying. As the reader we are also taken in.
The supporting characters, including Alix's family and Josie's acquaintances, add significant depth to the story. They reflect the protagonists' actions and decisions, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses. All characters, no matter how minor, plays a crucial role in moving the plot forward and intensifying the psychological tension.
Themes
"None of This Is True" explores several themes, including the nature of truth, the consequences of curiosity, and the impact of past traumas on present behaviour. The title itself is a reflection on the elusive nature of truth, as the characters grapple with their versions of reality and the lies they tell themselves and others.
One of the central motifs in the novel is the idea of masks and hidden identities. Both Alix and Josie wear masks, presenting a fake exterior to the world that conceals their true selves. There is a sense of unease throughout the novel as readers question the authenticity of the characters' actions and words.
Another significant theme is the power dynamics in relationships. Alix and Josie's relationship is marked by a constant shift in power, with Josie's manipulative tendencies often putting her in control. This dynamic adds to the suspense, as Alix's struggle to reclaim her power becomes a central conflict in the story.

Writing Style and Pacing
Lisa Jewell's writing style is clear and precise. She has a knack for creating vivid scenes and building tension through carefully written prose. The alternating perspectives of Alix and Josie are handled with skill, ensuring that the narrative flows smoothly and maintains the reader's interest.
The pacing of the novel is another of its strengths. Jewell expertly balances moments of intense suspense with quieter, introspective scenes, allowing readers to catch their breath while still keeping them on the edge of their seats. The gradual buildup of tension leads to a series of climactic moments that are both shocking and satisfying.
Summary
"None of This Is True" is a masterful psychological thriller that showcases Lisa Jewell's talent for creating complex characters and weaving gripping plots. The novel's exploration of truth, power dynamics, and psychological depth makes it a standout in the genre. It is a gripping, multi-layered story that keeps readers guessing until the very end. Whether you are a long-time fan of Jewell's work or a newcomer to her novels, this book is well worth your attention.
