Summary
Marian Keyes’ My Favourite Mistake is a powerful novel about change, strength and the issue of self. The main character, Anna Walsh, is a 39-year-old PR representative from New York who has it all – a gorgeous apartment, a great job, and an encouragingly empty nest while her two kids are battling through colleges, but as COVID-19 hit this woman’s harmonious life starts shaking. A string of relationship breakdowns, health problems, and professional turmoil, compels her to look at her life over from a new perspective. Her character returns from New York, where she worked a stressful corporate job only to take up a new life in her homeland of Ireland, with just a few odds and ends.
Anna is a multifaceted character whose life is brimming with contradictions: She’s a woman in her 30s who works in the highly competitive beauty PR industry yet suffers from imposter syndrome and a cultural gap between her work and personal beliefs. Her interactions are with Angelo Torres – a former partner –, in which both love and incompatibility worsened by the conditions of confinement are expressed. Secondary characters include her lively family in Ireland, the feathery stroker ex-boyfriend Angelo AZ, and the funny, endearing but quirky sisters who add colour and richness to the story.
The main idea is based on the main character’s struggle between her career and her wish to live a practical, normal life. As her circumstances force her into introspection, the novel asks the poignant question: How do we rewrite a story for which the clothes no longer fit? Not wishing to give too much of the plot away, My Favourite Mistake is an excellent account of the concept of change that may transpire at some point in one’s life.
Experience
Reading My Favourite Mistake was an exercise in the highs and lows of human feelings. In a perfect combination of laughter and tears, Marian Keyes outdoes herself in this novel as she continues to share her dysfunctional-induced path to healing. Right from the start I felt glued to Anna’s life – her accomplishments, her stress, and her disorderliness did strike a cord in me.
As I followed her day fighting against the pressure of her incredibly busy job, I could feel just how tired Anna was. The affair covering beauty PR works described as full of attempts at sabotage and moral selling of the soul to the devil made me ponder over the price for success in the field where looks matter more than brains. Her predictable melt down was still rather easy to empathize with, especially with the hard-hitting message on how the pragmatic ambitions of an individual can go in depletion of person’s best interest.
It was nice to see the way Anna was interacting with her family. Her sisters made her jokes quickly and the orgynous quarrelling with her family gave more emotion and warmth to the narrative. At the same time, I understood the feeling of the third culture — a person has left their home, but is not fully comfortable in a foreign country.
I discovered that the journey to self-finding is not linearity was interesting to note here that the search to finding oneself is not a straight forward one. Marian Keyes, My Favourite Mistake is a thrilling narration of some of these themes. Anna Walsh is a strong independent PR executive in New York City with a great job and a nice apartment, and she started experiencing cracks in her world when the pandemic started. relationship problems, health difficulties, and work problems comprehensively shatter all she has created. Her plot depicts her journey from working life and New York to her own country – Ireland to face new and old struggles.
Anna is a multifaceted character whose life is brimming with contradictions: She’s a woman who works in a cut-throat beauty PR profession but has to deal with feelings of being inadequate and the culture clash of the job. Her marriages — especially with her former lover Angelo Torres — are explored with both passion and incompatibility amplified by contretemps of lockdown. Side characters involve her Viva, an ex-boyfriend Angelo who fondles feathers, a comical but loveable family with Irish nationality, and two sisters who also make the story hilarious and realistic.
The main struggle is finding out what kind of life the protagonist is interested in after a successful career: practical and common or adventurous and passionate. As her circumstances force her into introspection, the novel asks the poignant question: How do we reconstruct a life that no longer suits us? I didn’t want to reveal too much, but My Favourite Mistake can also be said to be inspiring with its analysis of self-creation and its portrayal of the ability to alter one’s life.
Strengths
In that respect, one my argue that one of the book’s strongest assets is characterization. Anna is complex and rough around the edges but there is nothing not to love about her and I found even the most depressive thoughts accompanied by sarcasm to some degree. Angelo is, of course, less of a major character and therefore their breakup feels real whilst also having a strong emotional core.
Another worthy of mention is writing Keyes. From humor she remains very sharp but all the same blends it with emotion in a manner that makes one moment hilarious and another moment touching. For instance, and eccentricity of the burning midlife crisis – “The only time I felt calm was when I was weaving a small square of fabric,” Anna.
The thing is, the place—from the noisy New York to the realistic countryside of Ireland—has been described as Cascade Type steadily and accurately. This is where the parallelism between two worlds according to Keyes is aimed at illustrating the internal conflict in, and personal development of, Anna.
Weaknesses
On the one hand, the broad scope of the book presents readers with a detailed picture of Anna’s life; on the other hand, the level of detail seems sometimes excessive. Such related side-stories as the details over the beauty PR controversy might have been made more concise without a sacrifice of their significance. Further, it seems that pacing in some of the middle part is somewhat slow because more focus is made on Anna’s conflicts and her uncertainty.
The ending of the novel was quite fine but the ending of most chapters seemed rather rushed. After such an intensive exploration of the main problems of the protagonist, I wanted more time to describe the happy moments in the life of Anna and the actions she took to start her new life.
Final Thoughts
My Favourite Mistake is a powerfully moving, tender, and hilarious novel about the strength to try again. Anna’s experience feels very real and often mirrors the realities of balancing work and family, and riding the ups and downs of success, making it feel very real, and basically, amazing. This is a book for anyone who has felt stuck, overwhelmed, or even plain lost about what to do next. Based on the number of characters and true-to-life story, the novel became an example of the human spirit to survive.
My Recommendation
If you enjoyed My Favourite Mistake, I recommend exploring Marian Keyes’ other works, particularly Rachel’s Holiday and Grown Ups, which also delve into themes of personal growth and family dynamics. For readers who appreciate witty, character-driven stories with emotional depth, books like Bridget Jones’s Diary by Helen Fielding and Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman would be excellent follow-ups.
To anyone considering this book: Dive in with an open heart. It’s a story that will make you laugh, cry, and reflect on your own life. After finishing, take a moment to ask yourself: What would your reinvention look like? And perhaps, like Anna, you’ll find the courage to start weaving a new chapter.
