Marriage

A marriage of moments

By Tamunoimiebam BrownPublished 11 months ago 2 min read

There are days when marriage feels like an endless series of small, unnoticed moments. These are the moments that pass without applause but build the foundation of something lasting.

Emma sat on the edge of the bed, flipping through a weathered photo album. The photos were old—wedding pictures, family vacations, random holidays. The creased pages were filled with memories that told the story of her and Mark’s life together. They weren’t the grand stories of fairy tale romances. There were no dramatic gestures or sweeping declarations. Instead, their love was made up of quiet nights, unspoken understandings, and shared glances.

Mark wandered into the room, fresh from a long day at work, wearing his familiar tired smile. “You’re reminiscing again, aren’t you?”

She looked up, giving him a soft grin. “Yeah. Just thinking about the little things.”

He joined her on the bed, leaning over to glance at the open pages. "The little things" were the heart of their relationship. They met in college, a casual encounter at a party. Neither of them believed in love at first sight, but something about their conversation had lingered. They started talking after class, then meeting up for coffee, and somewhere along the way, it had simply turned into a partnership—no fireworks, no fanfare, just a connection that felt natural.

Mark reached out and gently touched one of the photos—a shot from their honeymoon in Paris. Emma had been nervous about getting lost, so he held her hand tightly, walking along the cobblestone streets until they found their way to the Eiffel Tower. They had smiled at the tourists taking photos and stood there, quietly taking in the view. They hadn’t said much, but something about that moment had felt complete.“We’ve been through a lot, huh?” Mark said, breaking the silence.Emma nodded, her eyes reflecting a quiet wisdom that had come over the years. “Yeah. But mostly it’s been the little things. You know, those days when we just... get each other. Like this morning, when you knew I needed coffee before anything else.”

Mark laughed softly. “You’re welcome. You always drink it first thing.”

“I know. And you always know exactly how I take it, even when I don’t say it.”

They sat there in silence for a moment, the weight of their shared years hanging in the air like an unspoken promise. There were no grand promises or declarations, just this deep, unshakable knowledge that they were in it together, come what may.

Marriage wasn’t always easy. There were moments of doubt, moments of frustration, moments when they wondered if they were truly made for each other. But those moments always passed, and they always came back to the small things—the laugh that was shared over a late-night snack, the touch of a hand in the middle of a crowded room, the way one of them always brought the other tea when they were feeling under the weather.

As Emma closed the album and set it aside, she smiled at Mark. “I think I’ll always love these small moments the most. The ones that no one else sees, but we get to keep.”

Mark leaned in, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead. “Me too.”

And in that quiet, simple moment, they knew that no matter what the future held, their love would remain in the details—in the small, beautiful, fleeting moments that defined their marriage.
