"Lock, lock, lock." For the third time that evening, I checked to make sure my front door was secured, and I counted the locks aloud. Finally, my tiny white terrier arrived at the warm bed and was dancing next to me. I was ready to go to bed and forget about the day. I heard little "clinks" against my room's window pane as I closed my eyes and felt my body finally relax. For a second I believed I was dreaming, so I squeezed my eyes shut and took a big breath. Another "clink" reached my ears. My terrier, Henry, was also on guard. My ex-boyfriend was standing there as I went to the window and looked out. I should open the door, he said. I assumed he had realized his error and was coming back for me, which made my heart leap. I sprinted over to the door and unlocked it. There he stood, grinning ruefully. "Oh, my dog is named Henry." As Henry hurried out the door to meet him, he remarked simply. I wanted to object, but he had already started to go. "Lock, lock, lock," I shouted, counting the number of doors that needed to be locked.
