Book Wars

Digital vs Physical

By Hannah ElliottPublished about a year ago 3 min read

As technology has improved, everything in the world has changed along with it. There is now an app, a website, something online for everything and books have not been forgotten with this trend.

There are now more ways to "read" a book than one would think. There are kindles, eBooks, various tablets to read a book on, audiobooks and good old fashion physical books. The question is which is "best".

I do not think there is a best way to read a book, I think that is all dependent on one's lifestyle.

If you are someone always on the move, driving to various places, then audiobooks make the most sense as you can listen to someone reading the book hands free and not worry about falling behind in one's reading and not being up to date with book releases.

If you are a commuter or on flights a lot, kindle/eBooks may appeal to you because you can have multiple books downloaded at one time and do not have to worry about physical books taking up space in your bags and luggage. You do not have to worry either about your books getting damaged on flights or while on vacation. You just need to make sure that your tablet is fully charged and that you have the charger with you or you may run into some trouble.

Those who enjoy the nostalgia of reading, enjoy the feeling of curling up under a blanket in a cozy corner of your home with a nice drink, then I have the feeling you enjoy physical books. This is for those who want to be fully immersed in the book, not do anything else but focus on reading and transporting yourself into the world of the book.

Which is best? I don't think there really is one.

I will say for the longest time, I was a reading purest if you will. I did not want to read any other way than a physical book. I felt that the other ways of reading was somehow less than, you weren't really enveloping yourself in the story. You were just skimming, that in not touching the actual book you were losing some sense as to what the book was about.

Now, I understand the joys of reading books in other ways. I cannot say I have changed my mind with eBooks, but I get why people enjoy audiobooks. The ease of being able to still read a book while doing things around the house, to be able to continue the story when needing to get other things done was something that was so lovely. It also is great for being able to access books that I had forgotten about, or being able to have a subscription to have access to so many books for one price is also great and a saver for your wallet.

Though I cannot say which way is best for all, I know my preference is the physical books. But no matter how I think that the important thing is for one to just be "reading". The new trend that reading books is popular is helping showcase the brilliant worlds that are within pages of multiple worlds.

I will say however, that I believe that there is one thing that will always be best with a physical book and it is a feeling that no other method of reading a book will come close to. And that is, the satisfying feeling of when you finish a book, the physical copy and you get to close the book once you have finished it. That satisfaction of hearing the book close, and putting the book back on your shelf, is something that will never be beat.
